What are inspiration points good for? Rerolling, sure, but anything else?

It’s not actually supposed to be a re-roll in 5e. You can get advantage on a roll by spending your inspiration point. To roll with advantage you get to roll two d20s – so you need to declare you’re using it before you roll.
You can use it for attack rolls, saving throws, ability checks. I can see how that would be hard to implement in this game though.

I see. But for purposes of Baldur's Gate 3, it's only for rerolling in dialogue, at least so far, right?

In my eyes inspiration points are the reward for specific choices you want to make. In other word, you decide to follow a very specific route of events in the game by doing chosing to finish your chosen Questlines.
To make abilitychecks or dialog checks working with different Starting classes/characters with a lack of an ability or Skill have a positive result for you.

So its something of a failsafe option you earn by finishing questlines or Events like the one in Goblincamp with that Loviathan Cultis Abdirak. Where you can earn one Point by getting blessed by his Goddess.

There istn anything more about inspiration points i guess.
But i would be an avid collector of those for the late Endgame in future acts.
For Situations / Events where it is not possible to Load/Savescum, because of horrendous long ability/dialog check marathons to get something done in specifi way.
