So, just kink of getting an idea here. I've tried Find Familiar, and I'm all for having pets. Many video games I play, I play as Conjurors and the like. The familiars in BG3 follow the PnP rules pretty well, so i don't think there's anything to change there. But how does everyone use their familiars? What's your favorite and why? What situations do you find them the most helpful? In the beginning of the game, I find that, the spell slot can be used to better efficacy with another spell, but once again, there might be something I am missing.

They don't follow the PnP rules very well at all, no. That's the primary reason that they're mostly useless except for deliberate game exploiting cheese tricks.

If a modder can get touch spells to work through the familiars I'd certainly consider using them more.

For the basic familiars the best use I found was to get close to an enemy so Astarion can utilize sneak attack.

They also work well for scouting. Fun fact if you can get a familiar to a warp portal it counts as discovering it for your team to warp to. I used that to warp into the Selune Temple in the UD after entering from the spider's lair.

Familiars are woefully not like 5e, sure they have gained attacks but they lost a lot of functionality, and mage hand dismissing my familiar just HURTS
