One of the important roles of the D&D cleric is to handle diseases. In fact, given that now in BG III simply eating a raw onion or a pineapple cures HP loss, disease may be one of the last things which are uniquely handled by divine magic. In the prior BG series, the most likely time a disease occurred was if you got bitten by a ghoul, in which case the affliction lasted only a few rounds, and so it was never worth a spell slot. But I can imagine other scenarios where Cure Disease spells might be a great asset. For example, imagine a swamp forest full of mosquitos and other biting insects, with will-o-wisps dancing about fallen rotten logs and toxic fungi hanging from low tree limbs. In a setting like this, the mere presence of the party characters in such a place might incur a periodic random chance of becoming infected. Likewise, a wound taken during combat might also have a chance for infection, with very dire consequences. I don't have BG III yet, so I'd like to ask, how does it handle disease?

The only thing I've seen that causes disease is the rat familiar, and I've never used it so I don't know how it works mechanically.

In 5e there is no dedicated Cure Disease Spell, just the Restoration line of spells, which is not exclusive to clerics. But as for current sources of diseases, they seem to be very minimal, if none at all.

Yeah, the 5E Bard is another subject worth talking about someday. But maybe if I ignore it, it will go away.

Although there is no Cure Disease spell anymore, the word "disease" does show up quite a bit in the 5E Player's Handbook. It's never been a major thing in the Baldur's Gate series so far, but I just see some good story potential.

You get some diseases in the bog I believe. I actually had to do spam restoration while walking there, so here is the use for your cleric.

Probably diseases or long term debuffs don't "work in a videogame" according to Larian. I'm extrapolating this from the fact that their version of being drenched in acid gives -2 AC for 12 seconds. Everything is gamey, and short term so that your fun romp isn't interrupted by inconvenient decisions or too much brain activity. Imagine if you had to long rest to cure some nasty conditions.

The "diseases" from the bog last a whole 60 seconds. Hold my hand tighter, Larian.
