Trying to load a saved multiplayer gamer and I keep getting Error Code 222; does anyone know what 222 is?

Thanks in advance.

@Thespen, a couple of questions:
1) Do you get any other text with the error? The error code 222 is likely only meaningful to Larian software engineers, so the only way us outsiders can make sense of it is if there is additional text with the error code.
2) What version are you currently using, and what version was the saved game played on? (The most likely cause is a version mismatch).

I did. Trashed save file.

I contacted Larian support. They were like, please open a ticket. I did. They wanted my save file so I emailed it. They were like, sorry. Code 222 is too complex to fix. The file is gone.

Had to reload from last autosave so I put in a suggestion that the game needs to autosave more frequently especially since it glitches so much.

Marin Falls thxs for the reply, nope no other text and using/saved were the same version.

GM4' thanks for the info - in the end we had to go back about 8 saves before we found one that worked - annoying but do'able

Hello Everyone,

[WINDOWS SYSTEM - PC]

This error started to happen when completing the (Lift the Shadow Curse).
To be more precise, when trying to save after finishing the (Portal Defense).

No matter where I went in the game after defending the Portal by talking to Halsin.
I would keep getting this Error code(s): 222

A link to the quest, area that I am talking about which I keep getting the error the moment I save pass this "point" or "quest"... whatever you wanna call it
https://www.ign.com/wikis/baldurs-gate-3/Lift_the_Shadow_Curse

It was extremely frustrating because nothing would work after hundreds of attempts by re-completing the same (Portal Defense) and trying different things like:
- Emptying everything
- Go at Act-I or Act-2 and save from there
- Empty this and that cache
- Try without Steam
- Lunch D11 GB3 *.exe directly
- Trying to install on another partition
- Move just GB3 game and see if it works
- Had no mods
- Reinstall, uninstalling Steam
- File integrity check
- Delete the AppData BG3
- Installing BG3 on another Windows System
- Disable the Cloud save option from Steam
- Etc...

I tried them all and it kept failing, giving me the exactly same annoying Error code(s): 222

I was at two steps from buying BG3 on GOG and test if it was related with Steam but I said no because if it got this complex for such a simple issue and Larian was doing nothing about it and there was no easy real solution. Why the seven hells would I be buying BG3 again since there is a high chance that I will get the same error. Had to step away from BG3 and also took the decision to drop it and wait maybe maybe until the year 2087 once BG5 comes out.

and then I thought...
Ask myself: "Have I tried everything?"
Answered myself: "Nope, I haven't"

1) I took my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) i7 and install Steam - BG3
2) Copied the saved game folder that would load which was at the (Portal Defense)
3) Loaded the game on MacOS
4) Of course issues here too
5) Had to give Steam and BG3 full disk access (Duh! - I mean everyone knows that right!?)
6) Finally BG3 loaded
7) Took my save game from my WinOS and copied it on my MacOS
8) Completed the (Lift the Shadow Curse)

Was crossing my finger and hoping this would work and

A) When to the camp to sleep, saved it there
B) When just the point just before crossing, heading to Baldur's Gate City and saved it
C) One last save after crossing, heading to Baldur's Gate city

This was the moment... I knew that A, B, C triggered that Error code(s): 222 on WinOS

Here we go...

Loading A... IT WORKED!
Loading B... IT WORKED!
Loading C... IT WORKED!

I was like NO WAY, it WORKED!!!
After all those tests and more tests is worked on MacOS?!?!

============================

THE FINAL TEST

Took those saved files from the MacOS and placed them back into WinOS
With Steam ON, Cloud ON and...

IT LOADED A
IT LOADED B
IT LOADED C

Holy cow... it works!!!
Not only that, it keeps on working.

Got no more issues saving the games now and it works 100% from my end.
Everything from the tests I did pointed to the WinOS version having issues.

Haven't compared the BG3 version from WinOS to MacOS but if I did not have a MacOS computer to load BG3 and create a "valid" saved file.
It would have been a case closed from my end and I would have uninstalled it.

If you are asking why I did not reach Larian Support, It is very simple.
- If such a common isn't address after X-Weeks and...
- If they are more users and web sites trying to fix it than Larian Support and...
- If there are no updates, news, information from Larian Support

Don't even try it because for those who know... it would be like facing the same issues when No Man's Sky started.

============================

I hope this can help some of you

Take Care,
Elsa

Any updates on this topic because this thread, this issues was reported on April 2021 and we are practically at the end of 2023 without any further steps on resolving this.

Impacting - Windows Players

Does anyone know if there was another thread with a fix that we missed?

My alternative solution may work for some but many do not have a MacOS at hand to test it out.

Thank you all and I hope this gets resolved
