I'm confused on this so help would be appreciated. I missed Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 at the time (actually have 2 on GOG but haven't got around to playing it yet) but came in at NVN and played just about every other major CRPG since. In all those games when you level up you have attribute points to spend, allowing you to increase things like Strength, Dexterity or Constitution, and talent skills like Persuasion, defining your character progression. In this game all that happens is I have a small selection of spells to chose from on level up, my attributions and talent levels are set at character creation. Is this because the game is still Early Access and this feature hasn't been implemented, or am I doing something wrong, or is this some weird AD&D (or D&D I don't know the difference) thing? Thanks in advance of any answers.

The game is based off of 5th edition, ability score improvements don't happen at every level. Your first should be at level 4, you will get the choice of a feat or improving your ability scores.

Not relevant in Early Access with the level 4 cap, but at levels 5 and 9 your Proficiency Bonus will go up by 1, which will increase all the relevant skills & saving throws you're proficient in (and your attacks/spell save DCs). This ~replaces the allocation of skill points present in previous editions. The only way to become proficient in skills you don't start out with are through a few select class features and feats.
