...Turnips were not just grown to be eaten, but had various other uses throughout the Realms.
They could also be used to make ink to pen magical scrolls, such as for the message spell. The turnips had to be diced and added to a boiling mixture as the penultimate ingredient, followed by a non-human ear. The mixture then had to be stirred well with a vundwood rod after each new ingredient was added, and boiled gently. The turnip-infused residue had to be scraped out of the cauldron and stirred into a sepia. After an hour of frequent mixing, the ink had to settle for a single day.
Turnips even had uses when they were no longer fresh. When thoroughly rotten, turnips were sometimes saved and thrown at criminals or heretics in public due to their rank smell and slimy texture...

What other interesting uses can we have? Jan claimed that turnips could be used for beer (apparently for its medicinal qualities, as well as its great taste), lotions, salves, cakes, muffins, as a meal served with fried imps and garlic, stew, salad, and tea. He also claimed that a wizard he knew believed that a turnip would make a fine component for a lich spell.

"As they say, it is better to die than to save your life with turnip."

Ah yes, the great turnip-lich Gongyla!

"It was when the sunset
Burned with saffron fire,
And Apollo's coursers
Turned below the hills,

That on Mitylene's
Marble bridge we met,
Gongyla, thou golden
Maid of Colophon."

Virion: 'Tis truly an adventure for the weak-willed. I've fought campaigns against the Hillgnasher giants and slew twenty of the foul beasts.
Jan: Did I ever tell you the tale of the lobotomized orc, my good knight Virion?
Virion: You have not, and I've no wish to hear it.
Jan: <epicly long burn follows>
wink

Recipe books scattered throughout the game that teach you everything you can do with turnips. Collecting them all reveals an ultra secret spell. Practicing Jan's formulas also makes you evil.

Jan is the only companion I legit can't stand out of the two BG games. Only ever brought him along in one playthrough just so I knew what he had to offer. Managed to keep him around up to the end of chapter 6, then kicked him out to do Watcher's Keep.

I guess he is not to every bodies taste, but Jan is one of my favorites. Good thing too, since he's the only companion thief that can still gain thief levels (prior to Mary Sue Hexxat in BG2:EE).
