I am not quite sure whether it was intended or not, but as of Patch 5, all the metal pieces of supplementary gear (helmet, boots, regular and Zevlor's gloves) no longer require Medium/Heavy armor proficiency, which basically pushes a min-maxing player towards just getting the metal helmet for everyone so that they're protected from criticals.

Is it going to be fixed, or is it indeed an intentional change?

If it doesn't actually provide a method of calculating your AC (i.e., is not an actual armour, in this case), then by rights it should not require armour proficiency to use. You could take a look at, say, the Helm of Brilliance, or the Helm of Telepathy as examples of helmets that are pretty darn distracting and cumbersome, but which nevertheless do not impede cloth-wearers.

That said, Crit Protection is a pretty strong perk to have on a functionally mundane item.

Never mind, I am a dummy, they still do - but it no longer shows in the shop/inventory UI and only appears in the equip menu. Probably something to do with altered tooltips.

Still, it could use better communication - so that you don't buy a metal helmet and find out that it prevents spellcasting for your wizard only after you do.

The boots, gloves and helmets are oddly rare and expensive compared to the price of a full armor.

I would remove the Crit Immunity property from a mundane helmet without blinking. It's absurdly powerful and a critical hit is a much broader concept than just a hit to the head.

Heavy armor parts do look ridiculous worn over robes so I hope it won't be possible for Wizards to wear full helmets just because good bonuses. Magical helmets that don't require armor proficiencies could be much lighter by design so they would match both robes and full plate alike without looking out of place.
