Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of the whole Divine One/Damned One mythos? I didn't play "Divine Divinity," so I'm missing some of the backstory. Who's the Divine One? Who are the Damned One and the Lord of Chaos?

Its been awhile since I played DD but ill give it a shot. The Divine One is a chosen person that has been blessed by the seven gods. He then becomes a somewhat minor god himself. The damned one is the baby that the demon of lies was summoned into (did I get that right). Someone who has played it recently can go into more detail.

The Divine One was your hero in DD - as described already. He was a young warrior, who happened to be at a wrong spot: 3 Black Ring members tried an evil ritual to summon a Divine spirit and kill it, thus using it for their evil attempts. This spirit split up and one part surged into the body of this warrior - the others found a place, too. Sadly, the Black Ring members were able to kill the other Marked Ones - and only hero remained. He was lead through the game by mage Zandalor and got a task.

His task was to restore the Council of 7 again, so they could fulfill a ritual to make him Divine - but the Lord of Chaos (Demon of Lies) disturbed this ritual, because he had crept into the body of a young Duke (Janus was a real brat). Well, they succeeded in finishing this ritual - but nearly all of them died in this attempt. And the Divine One was then set off to prevent the Lord of Chaos and the leading Black Ring members doing his ritual to create someone and take over the world.

DO found the ritual place, but came too late. He defeated the Demon, but a child had already been created. As he couldn't kill the baby, he took it with him and raised him up - due to typical Daddy/Son probs, they became enemies - and the child then was called the Damned One and hurled into Nemisis by Foster-Daddy. Well, you know: Law and Order against chaos. Son in love with Daddy's enemy and such.

Thanks for all the info! I'm really into games with good stories. (That's why I *adore* PLANESCAPE: TORMENT. You should really check it out if you haven't played it. It's got the most interesting and complex story of any game I've played.)

Anyway, I get the impression from the FAQ's at The Locus Inn (see link below) that Beyond Divinity isn't exactly a sequel to Divine Divinity. I'm guessing that our hero in BD isn't the Divine One, just one of his paladins who got thrown into Nemesis.

Anyone know if I'm right or wrong?

You are perfectly right. As the story takes place 20 yrs later - your hero is merely a disciple of the Temple of Order (founded by Divine One) and has to sort out this mess Daddy and Sonny created.

So, to give you my personal story about disciple Kiyana <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />
She is - unlikely as other chars here - a foundling of the Verdistis Thieves in Rivellon (large town in Div.) As she was bored, strolling on the streets one day - she found a billboard, where the Temple asked for new recruits to fight evil, Black Ring etc. She had no interest in a Divine career, but thought, all those paladins would surely be worth of looting. Her weapon was a broomstick to sweep under their beds (and find a coin or 2) - her white rags the typical dress of a Temple Servant.

Kiyana was disappointed with the temple - those pallies kept their treasure in unlockpickable chests, cupboards and such - and some even trapped that! One day she heard a sergeant calling the guys for a large battle - she mounted her mule (horses were not allowed for her class) and decided to follow the army in search for bodies and their treasure. She figured out, the pallies would rather fight on than take care of what was dropped on the ground. Being the greedy little thief she was, she oversaw danger and was drawn into a sucking swirl - a rift and woke up in the cell, you know as well as I do. her skills were rudimentary => pickpocket and bow.

And this is how I play her => a thief, trying to sneak and loot her way through - disguising herself where she can, pinching what she can carry (and using that DK bloke as a mule). Trying to learn as much as she can from her enemies and gathering experience. She's practical, does not believe in needless killing, is eager to learn and open every skill path. Her favourite passtime is looking at her treasures and dreaming of taking over Sir Patrick's house in Verdistis (a rich noble) - by getting enough money to pay the assassin guild for his death.

See? no sequel <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

*LOL* You've got a great backstory worked out Kiya! Yggdrasil only became a paladin because his father was one.
