I just finished DD and loaded up BD. I have no idea of what I am doing with the skills in the game. My PC is a survivor and I chose survivor skills. I met Edmond and bought the things he said he could teach me, but I don't see anything added to my skills. I am going to check and see if there is a skills tutorial but if anyone could explain what is up with the Edmond thing I would appreciate it.

He should have taught you some new skills that you can learn. Next time you level up and get a skill point, you should be able to put a point in one of these new skills.

I have yet to spend the 2 skill points That I have. Is that how it works? you can be taught a skill, but must spend your skill points on the skills someone teaches you?

Yes, that is how it works.
Welcome to the forum and good luck. Remember to use the search function of the forum to find hints that you need in the game. There is usually always someone here to help when you are really stuck.

Yup.
In Beyond Divinity the way it works is that you have to find teachers (or skillbooks) who will teach you skills for money. You then actually have to invest skill points in a skill to use it.
Edmund teaches wizard skills I believe. So if you want to play as a surviver only, that means you probably won't want those skills. But remember that in Beyond Divinity, any class can learn any skills. Your warrior can learn a few spells, and survivor skills like pickpocket, while your survivor might find it handy to learn enhanced two handed weapon-use.
Once you've got the skills taught to you, open your skill window. You should see about 30 (haven't counted, rough estimate) little empty icons. You can learn a skill in these icons, just click on one and you will get to select what skill you want to learn below it.
Skills are sorted in different categories. Just keep searching till you find the one you want to put skillpoints in.
You can spend your skillpoints either on new skills, or you can enhance previous skills by clicking on a skill you already have skillpoints in, and adding more. (Example: enhance your fire missle spell to level 4...)
Don't forget that you can always unlearn a skill for money. The amount of money depends on your level. Just click on the skill you already know, and press the trash icon.
One more thing: Teachers will teach you skills up to a certain level. For instance: If Edmund teaches you "Wizard magic missle level 5", that means you can upgrade your magic missle skill upto level 5. If you want a higher level, you'll need a new teacher who can teach you skills of higher levels.
A bit complex, yes, but easy once you get used to it.

A bit complex, yes, but easy once you get used to it. Ok I was wondering why would you want to unlearn a skill??? Are there so many lines of skills that you may not have room for one later in the game that you might need at a certain time?

Ok I was wondering why would you want to unlearn a skill??? Are there so many lines of skills that you may not have room for one later in the game that you might need at a certain time? No, it's because you'll find that you won't have enough skillpoints to go around, and sometimes you'll have to reorganize your skills. For instance in Act2 you'll meet different kind of elementals (fire, water, air and earth) in different areas. Once I killed one, I can check my trophies for their weaknesses. Then all I have to do is unlearn my previous elemental spell, and learn the one that my enemies are weak to in that area, which makes it a whole lot easier for me. So to answer your question, it's purely strategical. Plus, if you find out you don't really need one of the skills you learned, you can always undo it this way.

Certain skills become far less useful after a certain point in the game too. One-handed weapons are great when you start off, but two-handers are far, far better from Act Two on.
Chances are, you will finish the game with around 40 skill points, which, to put it in perspective would be enough to give a specialist two-handed fighter level ten in Deathblow, Damage, Accuracy and Critical Hits if he wanted. Those are the four branches of two-handed weapon skill.
To get that, said two-handed fighter would have absolutely NO skills that are not directly related to his sword!
That is how rare and precious skill points are - and that is why you will probably have to umlearn at least one or two skills over the course of the game.

There's five branches to the two handed skill. You're forgetting durability <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the reminder <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> FIVE skills up to a ten max with a likely forty skill points available by the end of the game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Yes, you get your skill points back - but you lose money => you buy them back. At low levels pretty easy - but in the end => I required 30000 at lvl 30, regardless of putting 20 skill pts into a skill or 1. (and 50000 at lvl 40) Kiya
