Just in case anyone else runs into this issue, if you use the "Old Schoolbook" in the Goblin Camp after speaking with the ogres then there is a potential for your game crashing. Once the book has been read, the screen goes black and never returns. The game sounds are still going and if you move your mouse around, your cursor recognizes that there might be an NPC or an object that you can interact with, but the screen remains black.
I've ALT-F4'd a few times and tried reading the book in different places, but the game crashes to that black screen each time.
Luckily, it doesn't appear to matter storytelling-wise, but it does crash.
