Why didn't you buy the identify skill up to lvl 5 from the weapon officer in the weaponry? And in Act 4 you can get it up to 10 from a BF trader. And you can leave at any time and have traders identify for a mere sum of 100 gp each. If you don't wish to ask the BF traders for this => every soldier with a trade icon, is willing to identify (even the hostile ones with a speech option, which I found rather funny: Business first, killing later )- just click on the looking glass in the trade menu and then choose all blue items.
Teachers have their own level cap when teaching skills. This is part of the game - so, keep a lookout for teachers and their skills/spells.
I have overseen at which difficulty level you play, but I could kill those 4 DK - and I don't level up in the BF (my way to play). I'm playing on tactical (but JUST by error, not on purpose )
DK respond to slash/crush/pierce/ethereal => resistance 0 fire/water/earth/air => 16 poison/spiritual => 10

You do not need to fight all 4 DKs at once. That happened to me once, but after I reloaded I approached slowly, and fought the first 2 together, then the other 2. Leave one character at the exit using a ranged attack, for a possible quick get away. Try to take out the archers first, then if necessary a melee character can run around as a distraction for the other DKs while a ranged character does all the damage.
BTW, the weapons officer that teaches identify is on the first level of the citadel, NE of the entrance, in the room that had all the good equipment you could not reach.

Ever notice how teachers teach you upto a certain level? Find a new teacher that can teach you a higher level identify. Ok? :P Anyway, identify is useless, put the points into something else. What difficulty are you on? My characters can easily take something 4 levels above me, I certainly never had trouble with the deathknights.

Thank you for your help but I already have the maps. Maybe you should think about changing your "handle" to "those with more, should help those with less." That would make America much stronger and safer for all us in the long run--just a thought!! well if you already HAVE the maps you don't need any help they're listed there umm. my handle??? I just try to help out people, see all, THIS is what I was talking about in the WMD thread. stuff like this.

Just have to jump in here.
One thing to point out *and* worry about, which I can only assume is a bug.
In some brief experimentation trainers (and books) train you up OR down to their level. So, you train defensive magic to 6 in the BF. You then read a book that would have trained it to 5... and it does. Your defensive magic skill limit has now been REDUCED to 5. Similarly, you train pickpocket up to 10 from the imp. You then go to the battlefield, and train it to 6. Congratulations, you just trained it DOWN 4 points...
So be very *VERY* careful when/how you train skills. Always save first and check after. Not only does it still give you the option to train in a skill that you already have higher skill in, doing so actually REDUCES the level to which you can learn that skill... even with books, which don't even tell you the level/skill they train you.

I think we all got off track here and I apologize for starting what was a (I thought) simple question, into a political engagement--this is not the place for such activity. Anyways, thank you to everyone for all of your help regarding this issue, but I still feel the game is unbalanced! How can you have a main character go up against (3 or 4?) level 15 deathnights when you and your companion are only level 11. I can't get the final battlefield key until I defeat these guys! And I still don't know why there seems to be a level 2 limit right now on the 'identify item' skill, when most items are level 4 and above right now--it makes no sense? How do you know you're not finding mostly level 1 and 2 items? The second you see them they're identified so you never know which level they were.

GnatB - as a rough direction => books teach up to lvl 5. Exception are the identify book from Fergus, the trap detection skill from the thirsty prisoner and one book in Act 4 for Alchemy => these are lvl 2.
As an explanation => in former versions, the BF traders didn't have these highleveled skills, so traders/books in-game were better. I agree, it's very difficult though to know now, which skill you've learned or not - if you don't jot down what you learned or if you degrade your skill level knowledge.
This is why I suggest this => jot down the BF skills per act and then look, if teachers in-game have a higher one. And save, before opening a skill book.
I still think, introducing new skills per act in the BF has upset game balance now - as the skills/books in-game have remained as they are.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear. Helping people is good. I do it because I WANT to, not because I have to, and it should be the same for everyone. Its all about choice. Take away choice and you are left a slave. What if you didn't want to help someone?, For ex. homeless or mentally ill individuals, we as a society have a responsibility to take care of these people whether we want to or not. Removing choice does not make you a slave, if you have kids you can't choose not to take care of them, you can't choose to drive over people with your car.., being a member of society means that you frequently have to do things that you would rather have chosen not to do.
