Just curious, poll type thing:

I'm using the DN as a warrior, two-handed slashing so far.
My guy is a mage and I have him use bows typically. He pretty much can stand long range without getting hit and pick things off while spelling. Was considering unlearning though and giving him a one handed spiritual and shield so he's more of a battle mage. You think that's even worth the bother? How do you guys use your mage (those of you that do)?

I used my mage as a 'pure' mage throughout. Though he did give my DK a hand in melee sometimes, he wasn't at all trained in it. A high INT gives a good damage bonus with Shadow weapons (Oaks are good, IIRC) which helped.

Developing weapon use to a reasonable level uses a lot of skill points - as does developing spells! I would not advise trying to create a true Battle Mage, as you are likely to end up with a character who is too weak in both areas, and will probably not be able to get some of the more useful secondary skills.

My mages typically use sharpened shortswords (no strength requirement) from their first visit to the battlegrounds (when they can learn sharpen). 80-100 points of damage per hit are a LOT better than they do with magic in act 1.

In act 2 and later they rely on their swords for easy to moderate fights - in difficult fights they cast hammer to paralyze (and damage) single enemies and lightning swarm if swarmed by many difficult enemies.

Reality is for those who cannot cope with fantasy. Fortunately, I can cope quite well.

I would consider my Mage as a BattleMage.

My Hero has no skill in Melee at all but does 195-297 damage with a Dagger (one or two-shots everything he hits). He has a shield equiped also, but I mainly went Dagger and shield for the extra charm slots.

The spells I use are:
1) Elemental Attack Focused Missile, with all 4 types at level 8
2) Shaman Hammer level 6

He can handle Magic or Melee on any monsters with no problem at all. Also, with Agility=71 he has +24 to Evasion, so rarely gets hit.

I just got to the Academy level 2, and the Mage is only a couple of kills away from level 31. He might make level 33 before the final battle.

After killing the final boss I plan to do a lot of spell experimenting by killing him numerous times and seeing the effect of the various spells.

The Mage is waaaay more powerful than the Melee character I played in the first game.

My Deathknight Mage uses the best Spiritual weapon he can handle. When melee becomes too dangerous, he pulls out a Regular Crossbow. He had invested in Elemental Missiles and Alchemy Extraction, but I'm now able to learn Weather Magics and intent to sell my Elemental Missiles and invest there instead. He has only ever invested attribute points in Intelligence and Survival. Because of his Survival speciality, his Luck provides a vast array of powerful weapons. He has played only a support roll so far, but hopefully these new magics will make him a more active character.

I am using my mage with some archer skills. Perfect combintion IMHO. first act invest in skillpoints for your bow and agillity while boosting inteligence for when you get to act 2 and the shaman magic.( stat points 2 to agillity and 3 to intelligence)

I have now a DK that can fire with has bow and with magic spells while my tank keeps the mosters at bay.

I use my mage as a pure mage too. My DK is a warrior with one handed sword skill points in slashing and shield. My Mage uses a staff (two handed) and spells. No skill poionts for crushing or slashing for my mage. I have invented most of my skill points in one spell up till now thus I made it pretty strong. The only problem is that it has a big cost in mana but I will fix it adding some more points in my intelligence.

Later in the game (or if your are a thief, from act one battlefield one) you will have an unlimited supply of wealth at your disposal. So you can actually afford to ignore melee completely (buy a never ending supply of mana potions). My favorit spell strategy is to cast elemental curse against water resistance and then lightning storm. There is nothing that can stand agains this combination.

I have my hero as a mage/archer with the DK as a tank. I find this works well since she can conserve potions by switching to the bow while mana regens. In the hard fights, she uses mostly magic and potions to replenish mana. Both chars have 1 level of individual healing which saves some healing potions...The DK is 1H slashing melee specialist.

Oh, my DK can convert arrows (explosive) and the mage has a level or two in explosive arrow skill too....

The mage has the skill to *use* explosive arrows--the DK has the ability to convert normal arrows to explosive arrows... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
