however... our North American power outages are really somewhat , aren't they?
The problems accessing the forum happened mid-morning my time, a good six hours before we went down, and I gather that European members were similarly affected... Any idea what the problem was?

If a powerline fails the connected power plant produces to much electricity? so it has to shut down, Other powerplants must compensate by generating more electricity, but the powerlines connected to those are over stimulated and heat up, to prevent dammage the cablas shut them self down, Now other power plant need to compensate that....

It's like a domino Morbo, I hope that you are kidding. Compensating predetermined loads of critical zones being generator-double-feed from sources designed to handle that load single-handedly is well known, but fuzzy compensation of unpredictable loads by a network already overloaded is rather silly. If two stations were 100 Megawatts output rated and loaded at 70 % constantly but a critical zone consumes 20 Megawatts is double feed then one station going out means loading the other by that 20 MW. The result is predetermined and the healthy station is then loaded at 90 MW which it can handle. Fuzzy compensation is not like that and it means that 140 MW need supply from a 100 MW station, which may not be handled. I do not expect or believe that American electric network designers missed basics, and I do not buy that crappie explanation that says the system was down due to fuzzy compensation like as if the power stations were humans trying to give a hand. Add to that that those stations are constantly monitored by humans or / and computers. A circuit breaker “making” and adding a load must be rated and known to add an affordable load. Those stations are not run by idiots but by some of the most trustworthy intelligent engineers; unless all of them were conscripted for war with Iraq of course. Two previous similar events must have taught everyone what should be done. Yet “should” and “can” are two different things. As for “can,” I would say that America should spend its recourses on renewing its infrastructure rather than spending it on war destroying the Iraqi infrastructure then spending some more restoring it. The American voters should really work harder on selecting the decision makers that can take decisions for the welfare of the Americans rather than selling them crap on the evening news. The global Internet depends heavily on American nodes and communication centres and everyone around the world would feel it if something goes wrong. In Japan, some ISP advertises proudly that they have direct broadband connections to the American major nodes. In the light of the recent events, they would certainly panic.

It's how things are organised all over the world. And it's logical. One breaks down, the other "jump in" to ensure there's no shortage. + One breaks down, the ones connected shut themselves down when they get "overheated". Only problen in the USA. They haven't been taking care of the net. It's in "private" hands. Those companies only cared about gaining $$$, not about the consumer and safety. Like I said before on this forum, the electricity net in the USA is 50 years old. And no one ever cared to look into the problem before this happened. Why do you think Bush started talking about updating and modernising the electricity net? That in itself should tell you enough. Politicians always start yelling about something like that when it's years to late and when they can gain something from saying "hey, look, we're handling this enormous problem, aren't we great?"

[color:"yellow"] So this is the mentality that brings a whole continent into darkness, how interesting!
Only problen in the USA. They haven't been taking care of the net. It's in "private" hands. Those companies only cared about gaining $$$, not about the consumer and safety.
[color:"yellow"] What you say here is that the responsible people sitting on chairs are not worthy of their positions, so how does that differ from what I said?
Like I said before on this forum, the electricity net in the USA is 50 years old.
[color:"yellow"] Therefore the design never considered the growth outbreak of population and machines! Yet it did hold up and tolerate, so how can you blame that?
And no one ever cared to look into the problem before this happened.
[color:"yellow"] Three times! Count up. Why should any one care when it count four or five?
Why do you think Bush started talking about updating and modernising the electricity net?
[color:"yellow"] Because Mobarak did the same thing two months before and asked Bush for technical and financial assistance, that is how that brainless got the idea.
That in itself should tell you enough. Politicians always start yelling about something like that when it's years to late and when they can gain something from saying "hey, look, we're handling this enormous problem, aren't we great?"
[color:"yellow"] No, because they failed to foresee it and neglected it until disaster kicked in; but hey, Bush is no electrician he is only a dumb puppet and I would not really blame him in person. It is the whole country elected class of decision makers, who decide to destroy others rather than building themselves.
Are you aware that connecting several generators of Tesla’s alternating current demands synchronisation? Electronic Synchronisers were not available 50 years ago. Therefore telling people that the whole system is 50 years old is yet another lie. Yes some cables may be that old and more, but the control rooms and the nuclear generators are not 50 years old and they do not need renewal and tax collecting. What a dumb ruse!
This network design might have been an open network where all generators are synchronised and provide a unified source from which all is distributed. This concept is really good for mains stability when loads vary and fluctuate. The only problem with this concept is exactly what could be called a disastrous shutdown.
Again I say that the computerised algorithms that operate the isolation relays were badly programmed to protect the system against such a disaster. How can any system provide enough power to a huge cable short-circuited to ground? The only logical answer is to isolate it, not to bring down the network of the whole nation.

Yep, you're really yellow.
I didn't say it differ from what you said. I only said what I said.
The biggest part of the net is 50 years old. Those are not my words, but they come from a former minister who claimed he warned about this a long time ago. I just checked, the item is not on the news anymore and I didn't cared enough to remember his name.
It did hold up... More or less. The powercuts and problems in Ca are known by everyone. And their have been "minor" problems all over the USA regularly.
On the news right now. Origin of the problem: Ohio!
Very simple. A nation to busy being to big for the world to care about there own inhabitants has left the powersupply in the hands of companies who care more about quantity than quality. Problem... the net they bought long ago couldn't handle the quantity. Becouse they never cared to update and modernise. That would just cut their profits. The numbers about Americans needing about 30% more elictricity now than 50 years ago, while the net could handle only a 15% increase max. are also in the news. No fiction. It was bound to happen. Just a matter of time. The good thing about it... it woke ppl up. Those companies will have to modernise now. Bush said so. And to save his face he might be able to find a way to blame it on muslim terrorists instead of blaming canadians for it.

I just think it's real typical that everytime something bad happens, instead of taking care of the problem, everyone involved is pointing fingers of blame. For crying out loud! First they blame Canada...Now they blame Ohio. It was probebly Homer Simpson! In reality who cares where the problem started? What the reality is, is that the whole system needs to be gone over and fixed! My 2 cents...

It was probebly Homer Simpson! I KNEW IT!!! DOW! @Goldylocks, Jurak -and the other members here are ok. Most here are very openminded. On other forums ppl call eachother names constantly. Here we more "discus" things, put our 2 cents in... and that's mostly it. This time it was about the USA. But I have nothing against the ppl there. It was about politics and big companies. We ware supporting the american consumer by going on about what went wrong. .;) Next time it could be about Belgium, Germany, Canada,... If you look up old topics you will surely find some where some of us are going on about Belgian politicians, about the UN, ... hm... think most of those are at the old forum though. We just like to complain about everything.
