I think they were, in fact, the same letter. Does anyone else know about this?

Yeah it's true. It's the same letter, but different pronounciation. It's difficulty to explain. The Romans didn't use the "U" letter, but they used "V" instead. But "V" could also mean a regular "V".

For instance, "Venus" in roman would be: "VENVS". Get it?

Like how in English the character C has several pronounciations depending on the context? It can be like an S or a K or a CH or silent. Does the roman V have different pronounciations depending on the surrounding letters?

I don't know.

What I do know is, that there is a great debate about how the C in latin had actually been pronounced in ancient times.

if you get latin on school though, they use the 26 letter alfabet iirc.
