Perhaps you were stopped by your feeling of guilt for starving your cat to the limit that he has to manage his food by himself; or that there is no communication language between you two.
My cats usually talk to me because I manage to understand them, occasionally My wife and I would depend on each other to fill their food dish with cat food and if Mimi finds no food she comes right up to me and meow to follow, she then goes to her food dish and I realise what she wants.
