My teaching: State 1 -> a sharp loud NO, picking them up and putting them somewhere else State 2 -> clap in your hands, sharp noises startle them State 3 -> hitting a rolled newspaper at safe distance from where they are and say NO (sharply) State 4 -> water squirt
as soon as they (and I ) survived their adolescence (12 months) my cats were trained to act to the loud clapping. Important is to be very consequent and keep this in mind: What may be sweet for a kitten is not-so-sweet if this cat weighs 6-7 kg afterwards (using humans as a ladder e.g.).
It's not so good if you scold by using their names - use a neutral word to express your dissatisfaction (cussing helps, they don't mind) - but their name should be reserved for calling them and having something pleasant for them in store. Kiya
And yes: A stove IS dangerous.

Water squirting doesn't work for Litha. He just shrugs it off. (I think he's a bit stupid. ) One that's always worked for me is a sharp tap on the nose. It has to be done just after they've done what ever they've done wrong or they'll get confused.
Gwen was beng very troublesome for some time (weeks). She was demanding everything and hissed and growled at me whenever I provided. I finally cracked it (for which I am ashamed ) and put her in the cat-carrier in the closet for 20 minutes. It worked, though. She still demanded what she wanted, but she was at least civil about it. She became a lot more friendly too, strangely.

saying no and clapping seem to have no effect on cujo. he doesn't startle easily.

Oh, I'm good at loud clapping - ok. Cujo is in for water - but don't call him by his name. What is he looking for on the stove and on the counters? Have you figured this out? Kiya
Tapping on the nose is usually what the mother cat does to educate their youngsters. But if you use it too often, they get scared of your hand. I'd be careful with that. Try to find out what he's looking there for and then distract him by showing the more appropriate place for what he wants. Is it food? Then put him in front of his bowl, stroke him and show your appreciation if he eats. The prob with cats is: you have to show more stubbornness than they have.
Counter: Does he want to have a good overview? Then show him the windowsill.
Is he bored and trying to get your attention by playing nuisance?
Punishment: find out what he really hates. My Kessy hates to go outside. So, if she doesn't obey and tries the same thing several times: I pick her up and put her outside in spite of her mewing. After about 15 minutes my Lady is peaceful again.

If you can't a cat to know something is bad, just hiss at him/her, cat's do it themselves so thet really understand it.

Good - show him you're stronger in stubbornness. Kiya BTW, I think Cujo is the reincarnate of the RR lair cat, hm? Good luck, was nice to know you, Faile

Hehe! The problem with being away for a while is it takes ages to catch up on threads! :P
@Faile: So you called him Cujo? I hope that doesnt mean he will go rabid and terrorise the neighbourhood!
On the day we moved into the new house we had the front door open to let a little air into the place while we bought boxes in. We were working away when we heard a meow and there was a cute brown burmese in the middle of the lounge room. After that he was into everything, exploring every room, sniffing all our stuff etc. My sister and I thought it was a laugh, the other guy who lives with us, Mark, insisted that he hated cats and to keep it away from him or he would kick it. Obviously this didnt impress us much. About a half hour later I was carrying a box into the house when my sister taps me on the shoulder and points out the window. There in the front yard is Mark and the cat, the cat lying on its back with Mark tickling its tummy. We havent let him forget it since . He's now decided he thinks we should get cats too .
After we had finished moving all the boxes in, we put the cat out and closed the door. Later that evening there is a knock on the door, it is the neighbour looking for his cat. We told him he had been here but we had put him out hours ago. We hear a meow behind us and he wanders to the front door from somewhere in the house. We still have no idea how he got back in . He is now a regular visitor (The cat, not our neighbour)

Oh my God , did i have a fun filled hour yesterday It was time to treat Cagney and Lacey for worms(preventative i hope). 2 white tablets now, 1 yellow next week and then 2 more whites the week after. Anyway Lacey took her two straight down the throat, opened her mouth put one in at a time , hold the mouth shut and smooth the throat for a while and Hey presto! it was done. Cagney on the other hand was a different kettle of fish,TEN attempts before they were swallowed, eventually very soggy and hairy tablets, i even buttered them up at one stage, it was just me and him locked in my Kitchen, it was hilarious the way he casually spat them out every time after all my effort, but i was determined to succeed and i won the day I am really looking forward to doing it again next week, NOT P.S. i have tried other methods in the past but to no avail, including crumbling them on the food.

Spick, this works for me: Blow gently on its nose as soon as the pill in the mouth (as deep as you can). Blowing on the nose tip starts a licking reflex, if you down jam down the jaws too hard.
1.Keep cat close to you by pressing it between your legs, hed is where knees are 2. Open mouth with two fingers, place pill in 3. close mouth with fingers, hold the wriggling cat 4. stroke over throath, bend the head slight upwards and then blos over nose. 5. Watch tonge come out to lick 6. Jump back and dodge the claws 7. Give her/him something nice to eat
alternative: hide pill between liver sausage. Good luck, keep the first aid kit and the doc phone number handy (nope, not the vet) Kiya

Cats, Alrik, blow gently over their nose tip and they lick it - reflex. Never treated a frog with pills Kiya
