I don't think NWN turned out to be anything else then Bioware said it would. It was however hyped by many people and made into something it wasn't. It was intended as a PC replacement for P&P D&D games and as such it's a multiplayer game. It does a fairly good job in accomplishing that.
The single player game that came with it was nothing more then a special form of the multiplayer game and was reasonable at best.
