I agree with you fully. In DD why couldn't we be any of the 7 races. The race you choose will then affect what weapons, armour etc. you can use, what stats you start with, and what skills you can develop and the attitude the NPC's have towards you.
On the graphics - 3D might look better, but 2D is much faster and more stable (I don't have a high end PC).
What I did like about DD is that you can develop the skills from the other player classes, not like Diablo where if you were a mage, you can only develop that skills - (I only found this out halfway through my first game, had to start over)
