Common piles of garbage or a couple barrels are not likely to be hiding something, but if you see an unusually high pile of rocks, several rows of barrels, a stack of crates in an otherwise mostly empty room, etc. then check for something hidden.
There is a set of leggings between a pile of crates in the house with the magic mirror in northern Aleroth. IIRC, alt will not show the description, though you may be able to catch it if you happen to run your cursor over it. The hatch in Jake's house is covered by crates.
