it doesnt really matter if you do the catacombs before fighting him does it?

well, except the horrid spider under one of them floortiles (any help?)
If you haven't completely finished that level (ie. Saved Mardeneus' sanity), then there's a lot more experience available for you.
As for the spider, try freeeze or come back later, he really is tough to kill.
