Well that could help him, as long as he HAS a VIA motherboard. That's not hoing to help him if he has INTELL chipsets though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> (Since he did not specify what type of chipsets he has on his computer)

I still am smelling a driver problem. (Or an old version of Direct X since it is currently at 9 something) DX8 had TONS of bugs. bleh.

No its your graphics card,i have a similar system as you and have a geforce 3 64 mb.I cant believe knowone here could figure out ur graphics card is dated by todays standards.If you update ur graph card to like a geforce 4 u will see a big improvement

I would check the size and power requirements of any video cards you consider upgrading, though (assuming you try that). HP tends to use small, cramped cases which can resist upgrading (not to mention air flow and heat problems once you get past the physical restrictions), and use small sized, low wattage power supplies inadequate for running much more than the original configuration.

Try a utility called Cacheman. It improved my performance by about 50%. You can get it here:

When it loads, go to settings and load the "Games" profile. Also set up the program so that it loads on startup and goes to the taskbar on close. Before you start a game right click on the icon on the taskbar and select recover memory. I found this program helps both Morrowind and Gothic 2 run better and access the HDD less.

Considering most of the better graphics cards have a fan built right on them extra cooling is not an issue.I have not seen a pc yet that could not be upgraded yet do to cramping.And a 300 watt power supply is pretty sufficent for any rig.

Obviously you have not seen many HPs. They have gotten better than they used to be, but some of their mini-tower cases are very cramped (as in remove the hard drive and optical drive if you want to get at the RAM or power supply connector). A fan on the video card isn't going to help much if there is no air flow to start with. Are they up to 300W power supplies as standard now, rather than something like 120/160W?

120/160W? raze, even intel P2 w/ the usual plethora of components need at least 200-250W. 160W may be for very skimpy pc's with almost everything intergrated on the motherboard.

HP does (or at least did a year or so ago) use proprietary motherboards with everything integrated, and spec the power supplies with very little headroom above the original hardware. Anyone who doesn't believe me is more than welcome to try upgrading a mini-tower HP without checking the size/power requirements first.

went to best buy the other day and the smallest they sold was 300 watt.So yes thats pretty standard and would go as far as saying 350 watt is standard now.

Ya so what?? so you spend 30 bucks on a power supply then upgrade whats the big deal??

Unless their policy has changed dramatically, HP uses proprietary, half-sized (at least for the mini-towers) power supplies that can only be replaced through them. Good luck getting one for $30. Maybe for an HP mid-tower case, a standard power supply might physically fit, or be made to fit, then all you would have to do would be to make sure there are no proprietary connectors on HP's power supply.

This discussion is pointless. I was just trying to caution Muskrat about potential problems upgrading HP systems (which I know from personal experience).
