Was just covering all bases on that one. I'm leaning toward a, somehow, corrupted installation of XP. You may or may not be able to answer this one for my, but are you running multi-partition FAT32/NTFS, or full FAT32?

Multi. When I'm running from XP, I keep my games on the XP partition. In Win98, I run, of course, from that. I don't mix flavors.

Just an update. Spoke with the guy who built my computer, and we discussed a variety of problems I've been having. After a test or two, he concluded it might be faulty memory--though he's trying to locate a disc with a memory checking program on it to be certain.

Ultimately, though, we're moving to a new CPU, 1 GB RAM, a new motherboard and sound card. I hope that will happen in less than a month.

Keep us posted then What sort of graphics card do you have again? It wasnt and MX based Nvidia was it? You want a card with pixel shaders so you can see the cool water effects

I've got a Radeon 9600, running an Athlon 1.3 GHz system with 256 MB RAM. Memory, by the way, was not the problem: I ran Memtest for 4 hours, and it came up with nothing. We're stymied. The only thing we're sure of is that it isn't a software-based issue.

The only good news out of this is that my wife and I have decided to upgrade the CPU, motherboard, sound card and RAM, while keeping the hard drive, floppy and CD-ROM drives. We're looking right now at a 3 GHz 64-bit Athlon, with a motherboard that has 4-channel sound on it, and 1 GB RAM. That should not only make this computer ready for Gates' next OS and its crop of apps (which will be important to my job), but also give me a very speedy Morrowind with plenty of mods. It should solve my mystery problems of the moment, too, though I'd really like to know what's going on in the meantime.

I have an Asus motherboard with Nvidia soundstorm inbuilt. The sound quality is actually pretty good and it also means I dont need to take up a slot with a sound card

Pretty much the conclusions of the guy who built my computer, too, though he favors Creative Labs.

Creative has rather bad drivers but the hardware is fine.

I would suggest a kitten because cats are cute

Too late. We've already got two cats, though we had them first as kittens.

No, though there are times when I wish I had a cat volume control available. Mandrake, what sound card do you use?

Do you think it's superior to Creative Labs' similar products? If so, why?

i'd say creative is great despite 'bad driver' issues as it works very well for me. i've no problem so far (so long as i know the specific programs & drivers i install for the creative soundcard) using it & in fact a dedicated soundcard is better than a built-in soundchip as soundcards are hardware-accelerated. built-in soundchip isn't. it will hog your CPU cycles & therefore diverting your processor to do a big chunk of its job other than the usual. hence slowdowns on system. u may not notice it if u never have a good soundcard to try & make comparisons.

if u have a friend who has a dedicated & good soundcard & willing to lend it to u for tests, u should try it out & see. creative has better audio response as well, unlike the built-in which sounds cheap.

I have no problems with my built in personally. My old comp had a sound blaster live value in it and I cant notice any audio difference between it and my Soundstorm on my 2.1 speaker set up

Heh, I've been gone for a while. Gotta throw my two cents in. I've been using Creative Labs cards since the SB 16 and the only problem I've ever had is getting my current card (see my sig) to emulate legacy cards for sound in Duke3D. Love'em and never build a computer without'em.

Good to see you back, Neo. How do you feel about on-board cards?

They should've never been invented. Nothing but trouble IMHO.

How so? Do you agree with the others?
