Just an update. Spoke with the guy who built my computer, and we discussed a variety of problems I've been having. After a test or two, he concluded it might be faulty memory--though he's trying to locate a disc with a memory checking program on it to be certain.
Ultimately, though, we're moving to a new CPU, 1 GB RAM, a new motherboard and sound card. I hope that will happen in less than a month.
