thanks for enlightening me on that part of supporting poorer neighbours. personally i feel EU is really a great idea if implemented correctly & with every member in mind. i wish asia has an equivalent of EU so at least we don't have 2 be shoved around by bullies.

Exactly.

But, keep in mind, that there always be stronger country within the union or coalition also, which will push towards dominating in this union.

The Euro is in that point a drawback that you cannot show around fancy new coins brought from your vacation anymore.

I´m really surprised that so many people here have a very critical point of view concerning the Euro! I always thought that especially younger people (as most of us are) are the greatest supporters of the Euro.

But anyway, what´s not been said here is that the Euro could be a major Instrument to bring people across Europe closer together and to form a great economical counterpart to the USA.

it means if u go to greece, u don't have greece currency 2 bring back 2 show or collect. if u go to estonia, italy, uk, anywhere in europe, there's only one currency: euro. which is great in its ideal.

egin, there's always a country or two that will vie for domination but if they're not too pushy, & there's always room to butt heads(not killing competitions here), it's ok. after all, humans being imperfect, any invention or thoughts or ideas that we come up with will be imperfect at best as well.

In most countries we didn't used many coins anymore.
Now, with the €, we have to use 8(!) different coins again.
I've noticed a lot of ppl are still not used to that. It piles up.
In different countries the goverment wanted to get rit of at least some coins. But the EU wouldn't let them.
In Finland fi they wanted to get rit of the 1- and 2 cent coins.

While I like the idea of the European Union in General, its current state is unsatisfying.
It is not democratic. Ok, there is a European Parliament, but I still don't understand what kind of decisions they make, and what decisions are made by obscure commissaries (is that the word?), who were never elected. Even worse the commissaries are appointed by the Executive Power of the different countries, while in itself they are a Legislative Power (I hope I put that right in English), which is absolutely undemocratic.
Another Problem is that the EU is a bureacratic nightmare. I'll give you an example: In my Town, Stuttgart, we have very old cable cars like in San Fransisco, connecting downtown with the graveyard on a hill. Then (one or two years back) there was this cable car accident in Kaprun, Austria, where many people died. What does the EU do? Raise security standars for every cable car in Europe. Who cares that the Stuttgart Cable Car ran since 1929 without an accident, who cares that unlike in Kaprun there is no tunnel, who cares that this cable car is so slow, that you can jump off the wagon without a problem, should anything happen? No - either Millions of Euros need to be invested to bring up a wooden cable car that is already unprofitable to the newest standards, or it has to be put out of order - the old people shall look how they get to the graveyard.
So, beware, Estonia, I bet your trams are not up to the standards.

I mainly agree with Flash.

But I do think that the Euro - if it's ever happaning to be a stable, good currency - might be good for Europe, too ... a kind of counterweight to the Dollar, for example (which name came from the german "Taler" from the middle ages).

At least there is a german word similar to "pound" : "Pfund". And it sometimes means the same ... as a measure of weight ...

They are relatives, in terms of language...
