Just some more thoughts:
The best place to identify items early in the game would be back in Aleoth (the village you started in) by the wizard you helped restoring his sanity. check the stats on the items you still can't equip. If a stat (like strength or agility) or level is marked in red, you have not yet reached that aquired stat or level.
