I always had to explain my way of multiplication/division to my German teachers, couldn't do it the German way, only the English one - and even today I have problems in jotting down numbers, if told long German ones (mix them up). The way of adressing people in Germany consists of "du" and "Sie".

However, the "Sie" is more formal, whereas the "du" is more like the allmost-extinct "thou", known from Shakespearean English. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

But "du" is still very much alive.

"Sie" and "Du" are in English "You", but is should rather be "You" and "Thou".

The German language still has two words for adressin people, where the English language has nearly only one.

How to use Sie and Du.

There must be some labyrinth with Sie and You.

For Offical Speak, Gouverment, Stranger, Aliens and Pepole You don't like, use: Sie

For your Family, Friends, good known People ans Younger One, use: Du

Easy, or?

An Exampel for Du: Kiya, kannst Du mir helfen? (Kiya, can you help me?)

An Exampel for Sie: Kiya, können Sie mir helfen? (Can You help me?)

Sie and Du are present in many languages, Russian and french, for example.
Sie is formal and used to address people who are older than you. It's simply the polite way.
Still it's funny because Sie is 'you' or 'They' and sie is 'she'.

For example Kindergarten, Rucksack, Wunderkind, but far more in scientific fields, especially Geology, Palaentology, Geography and Archaeology, as far as I know.
