Duck a l´orange in german has no real name I think or has it?
We would use the frech expression canard a l´orange.
or say

"Ente mit Orangenfüllung?"
but in Austria we very seldom eat it...
duck = Ente

to use an Austrian expression:

Was der Bauer nicht kennt isst er nicht!
= a peasant won´t eat anything which he does not know!

No, not really - I guess this poor chap is occupied with creating salty Marmite <shudder>, sticky porridge, vinegar for chips, thick gravy, grey vegetables due to long cooking, cake walled in thick icing, white soft bread without high fibres - how can he find the time to invent German food? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

Nein, nicht wirklich, I schaetze der arme Kerl ist damit beschaeftigt salziges Marmite <schauder>, klebrigen Haferbrei, Essig auf Pommes, dicke Sosse, graues Gemuese wegen langer Kochzeiten, Kuchen eingemauert im dicken Zuckerguss, weiches weißes Brot ohne Ballaststoffe zu erschaffen - wie kann er da Zeit haben, deutsches Essen zu erfinden?

can any fortgeschritten help me by explaining to me (slowwwlyyy) how grammar works in german? do give me basic ones which to construct a simple sentence.

i don't want to end up like in monty python's 'something completely different' where a french dude tries to speak english by using a (mis)translation book. the result was funny (& scary in real life).

knowing words & putting them together are totally different things. so kiya, tell me what should be combined & what comes first before what & ... oh i feel faint <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Fainting shortens the procedure <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

We have the SPO rule = 1. Subject, 2. predicate, 3. object. (noun, verb, object)
The best is you post a sentence and we'll both have a look at it. How far are you in declinations, conjugations, tenses and vocabulary? Which tenses do you know?
Kiya

Sorry, I have grammar books here - a very easy one is from
Monika Reimann: Essential grammar of German. Munich: Hueber Publ. 1999
ISBN 3-19-021575-8

but I doubt you'll get in you country?

I am Janggut = Ich bin Janggut (SPO)
the verb "sein" is an irregular verb
ich bin = I am
du bist = you are
er/sie/es ist = he/she/it is
wir sind = we are
ihr seid = you are
sie sind = they are

I live in Malaysia = Ich lebe in Malaysia
the verb "leben" is a regular verb

ich lebe
du lebst
er/sie/es lebt
wir leben
ihr lebt
sie leben

now, you come up with a sentence and we'll look into it.

ok let me try this .....

Ich bin Janggut und ich bin ein die Leiter der Leiter <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />.
Ich habe ein der Laster mit das Laster. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Haben sie binden der Tau mit das Tau? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

barnabus's dictionary link sure is fun!

side note: i usually read english dictionaries when i run out of books to read or when i'm bored. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif" alt="" /> maybe i'll look for a dudden here.

bin Janggut und ich bin ein die Leiter der Leiter .
Ich habe ein der Laster mit das Laster.

Ich bin Janggut und bin die Leiter der Leiter (ladder of the leader? one of the leaders of leaders: ein Leiter der Leiter)
declination of leader
der Leiter
des Leiters
dem Leiter
den Leiter

declination of ladder
die Leiter
der Leiter
der Leiter
die Leiter

Ich habe ein Laster mit dem Laster (probs with bad habits?)
declination of bad habit
das Laster
das Laster
dem Laster
des Lasters

Haben sie binden der Tau mit das Tau? (do you have a rope to tie to the rope?) I need your English sentence for this to translate.

Haben Sie das Tau mit dem Tau verbunden? (have you combined rope with rope?)

Maybe he means Thread?

Vielleicht meint Er Faden?

This is than: do you have a thread to tie to the thread?

Das wäre dann: Haben Sie den Faden mit dem Faden verbunden?

Oder persöhnlicher: Hast Du den Faden mit dem Faden verbunden?

Or I understand nothing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

Oder ich verstehe nichts <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

LOL!!

no no no. this is exactly what i meant when i said i don't want a repetition of monty python's 'something completely different' happening in real life.

i was referring to kiya's previous post on certain words, even if they are the same, when the gender is different, it changes meaning totally. just like

die Leiter = ladder
der Leiter = boss

so, naturally (& stoopidly) i combined the two 2 see if the effect is correct.

same goes for the rest.

der Tau = dew
das Tau = rope

kiya, remember? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

ok what i wanted to say is that i'm a ladder boss. & i have a truck that has problems. & do you tie the dew with rope?

Ich bin Janggut und bin ein Leiter der Leiter (ladder boss)
Ich habe ein Laster mit dem Laster (lorry probs)
Haben Sie den Tau mit dem Tau verbunden? (dew combined with rope)

The 3rd sentence is more difficult, because you used Simple Perfect Tense
ich habe verbunden = I have combined/tied to = probably out of a sadistic adventure game, hm? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />
