There's a "reputations" section in the logbook. I believe that if you massacre Hommlet villagers, you will get a title "Butcherer of Hommlet." Seems like something to aspire to. I wonder if there's a "Butcherer of Nulb," too?

By the way, I've ventured into the Earth temple and, to my disappointment, found no challenge so far. My party's already eighth-level. =/

Bottom line: quests aren't worth it. Slaughter everyone. You'll end up with more XP and more satisfaction anyway.

winterfox, do u mean there are non-violent quests in ToEE? & just how bad are they if compared to lionheart's non-violent quests (which to me is the best part of lionheart)?

maybe u can give us an example, if u can think of one right now.

If you want me to be honest, the non-violent quests in ToEE can't hold a candle to the ones in LH.

SPOILER

Example:

1. This woman thinks that farmer, whose wife died some time ago, ought to get a new wife. You go off to talk.
2. Talk to the wife-to-be. Problems ensue. Go talk to the carpenter.
3. Carpenter won't work for you. You have to get him permission to convert to another religion.
4. Priest refuses to let him convert. Priest wants another follower to replace carpenter. Go talk to the leather-maker.
5. Leather-maker won't convert to priest's religion (St. Cuthbert) unless he sees a miracle, i.e., could you heal his brother-in-law's mental retardation please.
6. Go back to priest. Priest can do squat. What do you do now? Oh, steal a scroll of Heal from the priest's cabinet.
7. Use scroll on leather-maker's in-law. Tell leather-maker, "Here's your miracle from St. Cuthbert." Leather-maker converts.
8. Run back to priest. Priest gives permission.
9. Run back to carpenter. Carpenter will now build a barn for the wife-to-be.
10. Wife-to-be gets a barn as dowry. Farmer and woman marry.

It was tedious, boring, and unrewarding. If the dialogue/writing/story were more engaging, I might have enjoyed the ordeal more. But as it is, ugh, no thanks.

By the way, I just wiped out the first dungeon in the temple and meet practically no obstacle. A lot of the enemies are too stupid to recognize that my party of intrepid adventurers are here to kill them -- even after I've massacred maybe a dozen or two of their brethen. One of the battles even looked promising -- four guards, a big earth elemental, and a medium earth elemental. The sad fact is that it took only a few rounds to end the battle, and there were four chests to loot, each full of gold, platinum, and other assorted treasure. I feel cheated. The next levels better have a big bad surprise for me.

maybe some people after playing so many RPGs for awhile just start to get sooo good that as they go, other games just seem boring and short...maybe that's why some people retire from gaming...just a guess...in short...maybe your so good that you don't even realize it's hard..and hint, hint..is there a way you can raise the difficulty level? what level are you playing at now?

Alas no. There's no difficulty slider.

I guess it could be that I've become so accustomed to D&D and isometric RPGs that I don't find anything challenging anymore, but really, in every game, no challenge is left after a while. Think DD.

LH's combat is still a tough nut to crack, though, even though I'm in the later half of the game.

in lionheart i'm almost to the end. now in the desert & going meet with the end boss but i have to deal with his assasins first. no match for my unarmed slayer feralkin. the end part really reminds me of DD's wastelands; desolate & only 3 NPC's to interact (one as a dumb companion, another being the vendor & the last one as a poor excuse of dialogue which leads to an obvious fight).

SPOILER!

I've been told that you can talk your way out of, yes, the final battle. If it were true, I'd almost forgive all of LH's flaws.

Winterfox, seems like you are almost thro with ToEE already. I have not played it for several days now, been busy. I am going to try and get some playing done this weekend and I hope I don't get disappointed as you seem to have been. Sorry.

I'm not so much disappointed as disillusioned. When I started, hell, the combat was hard, and combat is the only thing that saves ToEE from being a total failure, IMO. Plus, now that I'm in the Temple of Hackneyed Evil, bugs are popping up more frequently. Pathfinding is more horrible than that of the IE games, if you can believe it.

Only 2 things bug me so far: Mouse and darkness, but I'm only in Nulb now, lvl 3. Did all 20 quests in Hommlet, cleared the Moathouse, Meadows, Spider Cove and am waiting to get killed again in that fishing spot .
It's a bother having to tamper with gamma in my PC settings - and as soon as I've done TOEE, I'll delete this Logitech stuff. I've always hated it, but seems to be the only thing that helps.

As for pathfinding: I'm used to that from BG, they were pretty stupid also - though I recall a position I could edit it there. Well, I'm taking my time and hoping the patch will help me when I reach the temple (it's already on my map) - but I'm not going to commit suicide with my lvl 3 group

Oy vey. You are so going to be killed by the big fish. And there're other enemies in the fishing area. One of them has a CR of, what, 8?

By the time I finished Hommlet, I was level six or so. XP harvesting is so fun.

Pathfinding: Yes, it was stupid in BG. It is stupider in ToEE. (If you try to click on a point on the map where there's a wall/river/other obstacle between the point and your party, the game would freeze for a second to calculate the pathfinding. And that should not happen at all. No, my machine's not a crappy PIII or something. It's way, way above the minimum - and recommended - requirement.)

Big fish? Big fish? I can't even survive that large frog - he eats my warrior - well, I'm at a low level because I avoided those random encounters and I'm playing with 8 - eats up XP.

Yes, I already noticed those mouse freezes and the laggy mouse, can't tell you how often one of my members hit another one from the group. But I'm patient - and used to reloading.

I know it's not your PC - you have 512 MB memory, correct? Well, even my 1024 doesn't help me against this memory leak - maybe I do have to level up with those random encounters, but they're a bit boring for me, I play because of the quests not the fights (errh, though I love to loot my NPC afterwards )

Are you playing with NPC? I'm still fighting with myself if I should sacrifice my only male fighter and have him marry Fruella. So far, I just couldn't be that cruel . And I have to get Zert killed first then. Only Spugnor leaves my group peacefully, Zert starts to fight. And I want to keep Elmo, I love his drunken stumbling, same goes for the monk ballett my female monk does. Have you got a monk? Their feats crack me up in combat

"I've been told that you can talk your way out of, yes, the final battle. If it were true, I'd almost forgive all of LH's flaws." winterfox

it is true, as it's in the official walkthrough. but then they lied about lionheart being great & all that. anyway, with enough speech skill & charisma, i think, u can talk the guy out of doing what he wanted 2 do.

"Pathfinding: Yes, it was stupid in BG. It is stupider in ToEE. heck this is true in lionheart as well. if u try to click anywhere or anything with some kind of obstacle in between, everything will slow down due to what i think is AI trying to calculate pathetically how to walk around.

dang! lionheart's like a bad accident. it's horrible but u can't take your attention away from it.

Janggut: Actually, I've never had lag in LH. It's fairly bug-free for me. Amazing, eh? About talking the final boss out of a fight -- whee! Then my investment in speech skill hasn't been in vain! (And it did, after all, get me out of a fight with a daeva.)

Heh, I went out of my way to engage random encounters.

I'm the exact opposite. The quests are (IMO, mind) so very, very dull. The dialogue is so very, very unengaging. Hence, I'm killing everything that walks outside Hommlet and Nulb. (Actually, I've already killed Otis the blacksmith. He has interesting loot. Someone told me that he's got a CR of 10, but he sure doesn't look it. Oh, he had lots of HP, but he died rather quickly, and none of my characters was even remotely hurt. Disappointing.)

No. They all suck to some degree, and half the bugs I've heard about are associated with them.

I'm playing LG - even one little fib turns my paladin into a fallen one (I thought I could lie about converting )- so I can't kill or wipe out Hommlet etc. I've never liked butchering, therefore I can't play your alignment. But I believe for those enjoying the evil side this game gives more options to have fun, hm?

Oh, there were dialogues where I had to laugh (where I made the miller donate to both fractions, because of the "balance and all that" ). Winterfox, I originally come from the adventure game side, therefore I don't mind this running from A ->B ->C ->A to solve a quest by talking. So TOEE serves both sides then IMO, the quest chatters or the fight fans. What I enjoy most is all that crafting and scribing, suits my hoarding heart - and I like the 2D graphics there, I'm oldfashioned probably .

No, don't want to kill Otis, I've got his brother in my group, feel bad about having to kill little Elmo then. And I need him for masterwork items.

As you play with 5 and not with 8 = this explains your higher levels. I'm level 4 now, though I guess I'll reload. I've got Fruella in my group now and she's annoying. Not because of the loot, I rob her off her money then, but because of her attitude: I wish a devote yes and obeying orders instead of a bickering spinster - the problem is, with my LG group I don't have enough options to recruit NPC, most are evil and my paladin is somewhat picky in that - as long as she doesn't bully my dwarven fighter (her husband) I might tolerate her, don't know about further random speech options in that direction so far.

As I'm not in the temple yet, I enjoy the game, though I just had a fight again, where the laggy mouse made me hit my own comrades, grr. Let's see if I can kill that froggy now (holding animal?) - if not? I hope he grapples Fruella - I was able to kill the hill giant and the bear just by entangling and missile weapons at lvl 3, so maybe I'm lucky this time.
Kiya, off to kill/reloading again and hoping for that official patch

Forgot: The only "crash" I had so far was a registration question after a boss fight - I nearly got a heart attack because I hadn't saved and stared at the black screen, but all went well, I could return after that. (I believe, this method is unfair!)

How accurate is the game to the novel?

I hope this isn't true cause that would annoy me to such an extent that I will not buy another game from them .
I mean to have non-game material interupt your game-play would just infuriate me. Pretty soon they might have advertisments in the middle of a game or at a certain point.

Well, Virgo, I'm not making this up. I had my boss fight in the Moathouse and wanted to report to the mage in Hommlet (clicked on him to speak). And then this happened! I postponed registration and was on the desktop, but my TOEE.exe was in my taskbar, I could return. I don't know if this is a bug or done on purpose though.
The 2nd problem happened now 3 times with trolls: The fighting routine didn't go on, I couldn't even reload, had to use CTRL+ALT+DEL (we call it vulture's claw in German = Geierkralle)

You mean like movies already do, with strategically placed billboards, a car crashing into a truck with a logo painted on it, etc?

+ Welcome to the Ducal inn, would you like a Duff Beer?
- Actually, an acquaintance suggested I ask you about joining the thieves' guild

+ Shh, keep your voice down. Well then, would you like to hear about the guild, or have a Duff Beer first?
- The guild information.

+ Excellent choice. Guild members receive a 15% discount off Duff Beer.
+ First you must pass a test though. See that drunk over there? Bring his necklace back to me without him noticing. I have arranged for a mage to try to decipher its mysterious inscription; "Intel Inside". ...

i HATE being 16, already! I thought being older would be cool...well, i guess i'll have to lay of ToEE until i'm either 17 or my mom gets over the fact that it's really M rated! I think that rating on the ToEE box was a typo..i mean, i was sooo happy today cuz i knew i was going to get ToEE but when we got to the register..ok, this is weird..you all will have to tell me if this has ever happened to you...but the lady ran the game through the checking counter and it made this weird beeping sound and she said i had to be 17 or get permission from my parents to play it..that is so WHACK! I was so ticked off! It's a common rule in my household that you can't play games unless they are T or below rated..yeah, my mom is a therapist that works with children
she knew i was looking forward to this game..so she's giving me another chance to get it..she's going to look up what makes the game so M rated and the first thing she sees is all the problems people have been having with it since it's so buggy...so now she's not going to let me get it until she sees that the patch is out or if she sees anything bad about the game..but can i ask you a question? ok, i will! Why do you think the game might be M rated? is it cursing or something else? I really want to get this game..please reply!
