Yeah, you need Deadly Gift (to activate them) and Aura of Command (to get it to follow you around).
I didn't use them except in the Wasteland (late in the game). They make it too easy - and they take some of the experience you would have got for killing things. It is fun to do for a while tho'. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
