Science is often cosidered to be the same as Magic in a lot of games. After all, teleporters teleport, bombs explode, lasers burn, hypno-rays charm, drugs enhance, transformers polymorph, and tanks breath fire. And it all runs on a rechargable resource called mana... I mean electricity.

like kiya, i like nuts as well. uh.. i mean, my emphasis is on fun as well.

talk of science or magic being unnatural, well i think that's a bit or maybe way way off.

as far as i can tell about science, it's about freedom within restrictions set by laws of physics. for example, humans can never fly with whatever limbs we have on us. hence, the contraptions we built & in the end, we have aircrafts of all sorts. we didn't circumvent natural laws of physics, we merely learn how to harness them.

same thing goes with magic, i guess. but then we don't get to witness any magic in real life, unless u consider david blaine as a real deal. which i doubt.

True, we can harness physics to help us fly. What if we could harness meta-physics to do the same?

should work as well. we always do the same things with our minds. when we tell ourselves we suck monkey balls, we do. when we think of ourselves as intelligent, good-looking, whatever, we're right. who's to say we're not? it's according to our own standard that we judge ourselves.

so physics, meta or otherwise, can be harnessed. just that we don't know how, yet.

Then if science can be made somehow equivalent to magic, maybe that "harnessing of meta-physics" would be to magic as technology is to science.

What should we call that? Sorcerology??

Absolutely! It might be a bit harder to convince yourself to fly, but if you could learn how, wouldn't you use it? At least around the house, to change light bulbs and stuff.

"Technorcery", I believe, is the technical term (thank you to Quest For Glory 2 ). But you are right. Actually it's more commonly known as "magic".

heck, science at one time was considered magic for those who do not know that it's only application of knowdege of your surroundings. wait, that's engineering.

magic is a science of its own. the science that we know now is the physical & meta-whatever science. the emphasis is on material objects & that's where it falters. u know the word empirical?

Let me ask you, what is the best thing about magic in a game.

Magic is a shortcut in the natural path from cause to effect. That's why it's so appealing to the people (as opposed to science, which insists in walking the full path between cause and effect).

Any technology will be undistinguishable from magic if advanced enough to the people that see/suffer it.

The first is from Umberto Eco. The second from Robert Silverberg, if I'm not mistaken. They summarize quite well my thoughts in the matter

Magic lets you twist reality... 'nuff said!

I think it was Arthur C. Clark actually.
