OK, just bought DD yesterday...really like it a lot, been playing nonstop just about, got my mage to level 12 . Anyway, my question is twofold: How essential to the game is the downloadable patch on the site here, and if it is essential, how can I get a copy other than downloading? The problem is I recently lost my internet connection at home for a while (the reason I had to go out and buy a new game....been addicted to EQ and such for a long time). I tried to download at work and email it, but the file is too big. And, I don't have a zip drive, so that's out. I have a cd-rw at home, but not at work, so nothing happeneing there. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Hi, Battlemage, welcome. You can play the game in original 1.0029 - but the last patch (nearly 11 MB ZIPPED already) has solved a lot of gameplot bugs. And you could run into the resistances bug if you play the original version.
Kiya

I don't know if it possible to split these zip into several parts and mail seperately.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply What is this resistances bug you refer to?

If you wear an item with the magic barrier skill and don't have skill pts of your own already = you might get it. Your res. shoots up high with every save and reload and then suddenly crashes into high negative numbers. Every bee kills you at mere sight, same goes for traps etc.

Then you can get the stamina bug - even if you throw away the Cursed Halberd, your stamina might remain on zero.
Kiya

I played the game several times at 1.0029 and was lucky (cautious advance in game play) - but as I said, the 1.0034 is very comfortable IF
you have administrative rights on patch install (Win XP/2000)
you don't have background proggies running during install

ouch...that sucks....I spent one point in the aura of guarding skill (is that what you mean I assume?), and haven't come across any armor with that effect, so I hope I'm OK for now...I'll be getting my internet back up in a week or so, so it's not too much of a delay, but I might have finished the game by then.

this is not the only probem you might run into with the release version. There are quite a lot of bugs into it.

I would stongly advise you to get the patch and start a new game.

For example: In verdistis the game slows down (bug), some quests are more easily broken (Tingalf quest as an example and so on...

If you have a chance to get the patch, get it!

Nope, the magic barrier skill is in the survivor path - yours is a mage skill. The decision is up to you - I didn't mind the slowdown (memory leak) in Verdistis - but as Bernhard said, some gameplay bugs are a bother if you don't know how to react correctly. And version 1.0034 allows more quick save slots.
Kiya

I'd still like an answer, if downloading the zipped patch and splitting it is possible.

You can use a physical file splitter, such as the freeware Chainsaw, to split the patch into floppy or email sized pieces.

If you have access to older gaming magazines, then you might find the patch there.

when I downloaded the patch, it wasn't in zip format, was in rar. Tried to compress it and email it, but it said outlook wasn't my default client (use lotus notes in work) and couln't complete the operation. I'm no computer guy, so I don't know what to do about that.

Sorry, but I'm a bit puzzled about that "outlook not default mailer" message. Which program says that ?

I meant printed gaming mags, of course. They're often accompanied by CD-ROMs.

I have WINRar installed on my pc at work...when I right click the patch file, one of the options is "compress and email", which I did, but then said it couldn't do it because outlook isnt the default mail client, and I needed to make it default to do it.

Like I realized in the last post, with no internet at home, why did I even bother trying this lol.

Is it possible to split the zipped/rared patch into small portions and save on disc? in 1.44MB portions? With this chainsaw program?
Kiya

Yes, it is, just reread Raze's post again - why don't you do this, Battlemage?

Sorry alrik, don´t want to offend you, but do you really think one can easily find a gaming mag with a CDrom that contains the patch???

I don´t believe that there is one at all!

Gamestar or PC Games might have had it ...

Actually, I don't know.

If it was the german Patch, I could try burn it onto CD-ROM, but my burnerrecently had problems (program's side), and I don't want to download the big English patch yet.

Thanks a lot for that chainsaw link. It separated it into 8 files, and a 9th to put them back together. Took about 30 seconds to download and install, and about 5 seconds to split the file up. I like this prog a lot, I'll let you all know tomorrow if "Humpty Dumpty" can indeed be put back together again

EDIT: Bah, cheap office and its lack of supplies....can't find 9 disks...will let you all know when I do it...thanks again.

When you mentioned email, I assumed you were trying to send it to a friend or neighbor with a CD-RW drive.

You only need 8 floppies, since the last section of the patch and the batch file will fit together on a disk. If you can not quite find 8, a higher capacity formatting program will reduce that to 7 (not a huge help, I know).

SuperFormat (20KB)

Quote
SuperFormat lets you create additional disk space on a standard 3.5 inch floppy disk. The program formats the floppy to hold 1.72 MB of data instead of the standard 1.44 MB. It comes with an adequate help file and is easy to use. NOTE: SuperFormat runs in a DOS box. Users report that SuperFormat does not format disks properly in Win 2000/ XP. (Previously formatted disks can be used in these OS.)

A program called fdformat can do slightly better on capacity (not enough to make a difference in this case), but must be run from DOS mode.
