Here's my theory on why the baby should not be killed.
The Demon of Lies needs a blood sacrifice of the baby by the Divine One in order to complete the summoning of the Lord of Chaos.
Since the baby was not killed, the world (and the baby) is saved, and the Lord of Chaos is still stuck in hell.
Evidence: 1. Janus enters the Council of 7 immediately after the blessing is concluded. Coincidence? He could have killed the Marked One and the Council before that, since he apparently knows of the Council's activities.
2. While the Divine One is still "dead" from the blessing, several months have passed without any summoning. The moment the Divine One returns, the summoning for the Lord of Chaos starts.
3. The Lord of Lies allowed the Black Ring members to deal with the Divine One one at a time, instead of letting them all gang up to kill the Divine One. Reason is he wants the Divine One to live (but still carry on the ruse).
4. If the Lord of Chaos has taken over the baby's body, he should be able to very soon use his power to take over the world. Would the Lord of Chaos be so stupid as to leave himself vulnerable for 20 years until he grows up and comes to power? For that matter, why not sacrifice an innocent(?) adult to save all the trouble.
5. If the Black Ring can kill 2 marked ones that easily, how is it that the last remaining marked one is so hard to kill? Reason is they purposely let the last marked one survive.
So it was all an elaborate trap to make the Divine One summon the Lord of Chaos. Luckily the Divine One is smarter.

Nice One. I did not stop and think of what actually happens in the ending, I was so exited with the game that as soon as I beat the game I just started playing again. I beat the game twice each with every character and I still love the game as it was my first time........good work Larians, Keep up the good work

but i think that the baby at the end wasn't get to be sacrificed by the demon of lies at all, but that the demon of lies needed to be reborn from a child. and that the child himself is the demon of lies.
i still wonder who's child it is , the black ring used for the cerimonial.

I think you guys got it all wrong. First of all, the baby does get killed (you kill it, it's just not being actually shown how you stab it with the knife, because it would be too graphic and stuff). Second, the baby is the lord of chaos. Well, that's my understanding anyway, prove that I'm wrong.

Second, the baby is the lord of chaos
that's exactely what i said @bundy but i don't think the baby is killed. the end movie doesn't show this at all, it gives ous superstition weather the child is killed or has survived. but @Lar mentioned in one of his latest intervieuws that will tell you more of what happend to the child. soo i'm gessing the baby is still alive.

Who's baby? Josie's?? (Just a guess)
I think the ending was like the movie Omen, so I agree with Bean. the ending was kept open by purpose. Kiya

Too graphic after seeing orcs turn into fountains of blood? I think the child survives. Perhaps the Divine One wants to raise the Lord of Chaos in a nurturing environment and make it a good Lord of Chaos. Reality, of course, will have other plans. Someone from above the Black Ring will come and claim the child to quickly corrupt it.

iy's true, why did the black ring waited before the marked one to return before transforming janus to the child -> so it becomes the lord of chaos itself????
it would be great if those kinds of details would be explained in perhaps in a book or so
