Can I have a step-by-step guide to how to download the working hex editor please, I have tried for months to get it, but the hackman version doesn't work, do I need to install something else to run the hex-editor menu?

What exactly are you having problems with? I'm not getting much for the current Hackman web page since I have javascript dissabled, though their programs index works fine. There are other places to download it. It requires some Visual Basic runtime files, if you are getting an error message about missing files. Maybe you would find Frhed easier to use? Make a backup before editing any file, though. IIRC, Frhed writes directly and immediately to the file as you edit, so there is no undo.

When I open it, it says I have to open it with something else, then it brings up a big list of stuff (e.g. microsoft word, powerpoint, text document etc) it's as if I don't have a file it runs from, which is strange because save editors work fine, trainers don't work either though, I just thought I was doing something wrong...

Sounds like you are trying to execute the data.000 file. Hackman does not associate itself with .000 files, so will not automatically come up when they are double clicked (or select | Enter). Start Hackman through the Start menu shortcut. Then, click on the 'open' toolbar icon, or select 'File | Open | Open File...', browse to the save game subfolder of the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames' folder, open the data.000 file and edit. I'd make a copy of the save game folder first, and maybe another of the data.000 file in that new folder, for easier/safer reverting to the original if something goes wrong.
You can also start Hackman, then drag-and-drop the data.000 file from the save you want to edit from Windows Explorer into Hackman.
Alternately, the 'Open With' dialog should have the option to browse to a specific application, though I would not associate *.000 files with Hackman.

There are no Divinity-specific hex editors (though iZakaroN's SaveEditor is basically a specific purpose, limited function hex editor). Using a hex editor to edit the data.000 file is similar to using a text editor to write a letter. In binary files, rather than having the familiar characters and numbers, data is in the hex format, so consists of the numbers 0-9 and letters A-F. The data is in pairs of digits, so the values can go up to FF, or 255 in decimal format. HHD HexEditor

You do not need Javascript for a hex editor.
There is a description of the save editor in that topic. Basically, you run the save editor, click on the '...' button and browse to the saved game folder you wish to modify, and open the data.000 file. You can then edit the experience points, primary stats and skill points (I found adding unused skill points then loading the game and learning skills to be more reliable than trying to learn skills from within the save editor).
