The Magical Ring of King Solomon

The ancient lore contains many stories based on the magical Ring of King Solomon, and in those fables it is said that King Solomon had the power over the genies and bid them to work for him in building his wondrous palace of ivory and pearl. As the fables go, they all agree on that King Solomon had had one lazy genie whom he punished by trapping him in his ring for as long as he lived and that the lazy genie shall serve with all his power any successor who bears the Ring of Solomon on his right hand forefinger and not any other.
The curse of King Solomon that haunted the lazy genie gave the bearer of the ring the right to give the genie any commands to fulfil any wish except three, love, life and death.

The genie would not kill for the bearer or resurrect any life as it is beyond his powers.
The genie could not force someone to love the bearer of the ring.
Anything else is a wish and a command that must be fulfilled ever so promptly or the genie would feel a burning pain that he could not tolerate.

So this item would be a fantastic find too and the bearer of King Solomon’s Ring may wish any wish but must also suffer any negative consequences if he made any extreme wishes.

Keeping this concept in mind we may wish from our Larian Genie to include such a ring in Divinity II but change its name from The Magical Ring of King Solomon to The Magical Ring of King Ferol or something.

Kind regards.

this sounds like that spirit who's accompaning you in lionheart.
So we have somekind of a portable wishing well then?

It would be nice if there were a lot of special items in the game. espacialy when there's a story attached to them.

i realy hope that in the history of "brightblade", the sword of Lord Seth, could be explained!

maybe the ring could be used in an easteregg.
a wishing ring, and everything you wish gets another result then you tought of.
i like those poetic justice thingies.
it reminds me of those old comic classics in de 70-ties called "shock"
there were a lot of short storys about the greed and the hunger for power from people.
And mostely they achieved there goal, but with loosing there friends our with crippeling there faces, or going insane etc.

Eggzaktly

You got it right Bean.

That is really the idea behind the Magical Ring of King Solomon.
If your wishes were modest and well reasoned you could use the ring to become rich, loved and powerful indirectly and permanently.

If you think in a greedy way the wish is fulfilled in a sinister way because you are overloading a lazy genie who really wishes to kill you but he is forbidden.

So imagine the comedy that can arise from a powerful servant of yours who wishes of nothing else but killing you in a deserted place so that he may go back to sleep for a thousand years or so.

He may not kill you or any one but he could fulfil your wishes in the deadliest ways.

Kind regards.

This could be a good item. You could activate it anytime where a list of generic wishes appeared, for example:

Quote
What do you ask for your first wish, Master?
 1. Increase my abilities.
 2. Increase my resistances.
 3. Increase my skills.
 4. Give me a powerful magical item.
 5. Nothing for now.

At certain points in the story, the ring could become a speech option in story plots:

Quote
You'll need to speak to the Thieves Guild about that.
 1. Where can I find the Thieves Guild?
 2. You colaborate with thieves? Die, scum!
 3. Thank you, friend.
 4. (Wish to be taken to the Thieves Guild.)

And in some places, you may be able to drag it over an object to interact with it. For example, to enter the castle, you need to climb the wall with a rope and grapling hook. If you are unable to find these tools, you can drag the Wishing Ring over the wall, offering:

Quote
I could wish myself to the other side of this wall!
 1. Make a wish.
 2. Save your wish for later.

Larian would just have to be careful that they do not make it easy to break plot by wishing your way through the game. If they restrict what can be wished, there won't be any imbalancing issues, and most options will have the negative effect of a lack of experience. In the last example, you then need another wish to get out again, unless you can find a secret passage or such! Although other comedic pay-backs would be welcome too.

Thoughts?

P.S. I seem to remember a genie bottle in an old game called Sinbad. I never played the game much, though. Does anyone else know the one I mean?

That was very thoughtful HandEFood.

The way I imagined the ring is that it is similar to the lantern and must be rubbed by fingers to release the genie temporarily.

Genie (talking): Make it quick before I lose my temper master.
Not by written dialogue but by a very comic and sinister voice.

Genie (talking): Not again! This is getting intolerable. You just rubbed me a month a go. Is that going to be so frequent? Sheesh!

Genie (talking): Wishes, wishes, wishes ... your damn silly requests seem to never expire.

Genie (talking): What is it this time my restless master (Yawn).

So besides an endless sarcastic set of funny and entertaining comments, the genie could fulfil the wishes appropriately.

Avatar choice: Get me out of here quickly (surrounded by many strong foes in a dungeon).
The genie fulfils his wish by getting him out and putting him on the edge of a cliff at the end of a narrow tongue of rock with even stronger but fewer foes approaching.

Avatar choice: I need a strong sword of maximum damage.
The genie gives him a completely damaged and useless sword.

Avatar choice: I wish I had a lot of money.
The genie gives the Avatar a cow and tells him that he can milk it every day and sell the milk to gain a lot of money.

Avatar choice: I wish I had a lot of gold more than anyone in the world.
The genie takes him into a very deep cave in the mountain and shows him a huge gold block of hundreds of tons.

So he fulfils his wishes alright but in the most sinister way as to block a master’s greed.

Along with greedy funny wishes, comes the humble wishes of some food to offer to a poor man or a few gold coins to assist freeing an innocent prisoner, etcetera.

In that way, the ring would promptly help in all none selfish wishes and literally punish the Avatar for every greedy wish.

I am really looking forward to such a ring.

since we have runes to decipher in RRR & i suppose DD2 as well, we should make this ring of solomon more versatile.

hence Solomon's Magic Decoder Ring!

yeah, i know; lame.
