It sounds like the cut scene is not finishing properly. Try running the configuration program and switching to software mode (this helps with some cut scene problems), and maybe reduce the resolution, until getting past that point.
The default install path is 'C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity'. You can right click on the short cut to Divinity and select properties to see the path to the program, in case you changed the install path under XP.
