Most people celebrate Thanksgiving by gathering with family or friends for a holiday feast. Thanksgiving was first celebrated by Pilgrims and Native Americans in colonial New England in the early 17th century. Its actual origin, however, probably traces to harvest festivals that have been traditional in many parts of the world since ancient times(see Festivals and Feasts). Today Thanksgiving is mainly a celebration of domestic life, centered on the home and family.
And we all feast on gigantic fat turkeys stuffed full of Apple/Sausage stuffing with mashed potatoes( remember potatoes?? ) and gravy, maybe some yams, carrots, or corn, and lots of Cranberry Jelly....Holy S&it i'm starvin already! Does this help, oh lovely LUCRETIA??
Really i am hungry! Oh and @ faile and Kiya a happy tofuturkey day to you two too!

So other than being with the family, there is no point to the celebration? Sounds a lot like a party for the Krokoldezen (for the few here that might know Kulderzipken )

@ Jurak
thank you for explaining. Well It seems to me like a nice celebration. It is a nice opportunity for familly get together and have fun. You know? I think that every day should be like this. I lke it. We do that thing a lot here but not with stuffed turkey. Especially on Sundays when the weather is good, we get together in the summer house and cook meat in a natural fire (not in the stove) and we sit all together in the table eat and have fun.
Potatos? Love them. I am starving too. *Lucretia is looking her sandwich with really bad intentions*
Happy Thanks Giving to everyone! Have a nice time all of you!

Oh, Faile and Jurak, I'm really touched - that you both know about my vegetarianism <rubbing her eyes with an apron> - I wish you all a happy thanksgiving - with your family, friends, pets and even the one or other turkey that wasn't killed because you didn't have the heart to do it -
Kiya <thinking of 2 ducks that fluttered for years in our garden in Sri Lanka - they were a gift supposed to be a meal. But even our gardner couldn't kill them. We kids stood in the way and gave him a great fight. Kids won - adults gave up, feathers were everywhere >

I thought part of thanksgiving was giving thanks to the native Americans for providing the colonists with food for the winter (They were starving) One of the foods was turkey which is why its now traditionally eaten on thanksgiving, to remember the kindness shown by the natives to the colonists.
Not that it stopped them from later virtually wiping out their culture and stealing all their land. But lets not go into that

@ Spick: I never absolved myself from guilt for the Australian aborigines. I think every white person should suffer guilt for the indignities we have inflicted on "primitive" peoples in the name of "civilization". And I feel it every moment of every day.

This sounds like bigotry at its finest! Just because I was born white does NOT make me a racist, and I am not accountable for the atrocities commited by others.
