I have level 5 summon Skeleton with the maxed out summoning passive skill that ups the level of your summons by 5... I am level 33 and I still think they are useful...Along with a dreadknight, they are great distractions to my enemies to keep them off my back so I could kill them from safety... I don't see what is wrong with that...
