Larian Studios Forums Divine Divinity (English) General Should i do the brooch quest? what do i get??

You have to go to the Dark Forest eventually anyway, but there is no time limit on getting the brooch. IIRC you just get experience as the reward. I cleared most of Rivertown and Verdistis, then entered the castle before going to the Dark Forest, so I think I was in the low or mid thirties for character level.
