It could be fun to know how other people holds Christmas and what their special traditions are.

I will start to tell about my Christmas:
We always eat Pig or Duck at Christmas eve. After that we have "Ris a' la mande"
Later at the evening we gonna dance and sing around the Christams tree with all the presents under. After that we can open our presents. And we will just have a great time the rest of the evening. (eating candy and stuff like that)
(all this happens the 24th Dec.)
And the rest of December is like everyone elses.

How is your normal Christmas?

My usual Chritmas:

I visit my parents (as I´m single) and then we sit together under a christmas tree and chat a bit. My mother plays christmas songs on the piano and I sing some of them.

We eat carp (sp?) (a fish) and afterwards we go to the church.

Very, very idyllic ,but rather boring

We celebrate on Dec 25. But the great party is on 31st. We eat lamb (sp?) and we make much of traditional sweets like a pie which is more like a cake and we put in there a coin. After the change of the year, we start to cut the cake into pieces. One for Christ. One for the poor, one for the house, and then one for the father, mother and children and guests if there is any. The one who takes the piece with the coin, is going to be lucky for the rest of the year.

Some people use to go to church but others prefer to stay home. It is after all the only days that we can gather up and be all together. The presents we open them after the change of the year. And then we play cards. Usually with little money just to see if the new year brought us luck.

Christmas is always the time for socialization.

We sit together , with fine meals (often original Bavarian meal, because my mother comes from there) and ... well socialize. Talking and such things. Some christmas music always in the background ...

It's the time all relatives of our family meet.

Hmm well Xmas over here is usually ... well rather hot, somewhere around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, which means that an awful lot of ppl have BBQ parties in their backyard(garden) or go to the beach, personally I generally have to work my butt off, since I am in the Hospitality Industry.

I guess the Best part for me is after the Xmas Lunch when all the staff gets together to sit down to the leftovers (grin) that the Kitchen prepared for us (if we are lucky) and have a good old time untill the next day, when I am back at work <groan> since we are open 365/366 days a year it kinda becomes really depressing when the Holiday season comes around, being lazy by preference it means that a Holiday to us Hospitality workers, is to work twice as hard when everybody else is having fun.

However since I have been doing this typ0e of work for decades, I have come to the conclusion that either; I like it, or I am just plain stoopid

this year its going to be differant. we are to israel to see my sister. does anyone think its dangerous for americans to go to israel right now?

Christmas? well, my family doesn't make a big deal about it, just another holiday and special food. Thats it, were all atheďstic so it doesn't have any real value to us.

It's one of these days...

my family members are mostly christians so we normally go to church a lot especially on the week before christmas.

there's dinner on xmas eve, which is similar to chinese new year eve style where we have all (or nearly all) family members gather. u can say it's similar to thanksgiving. after that some who feel up to it will go to church for midnight mass prayers, where u get to see candles lighting up the cathedral. it's just beautiful.

the next day. xmas. everybody wakes up to greet everyone happy xmas. church for prayers to start it all. then after that, when we get back home will the gifting scene happen. lunch is quite a feast & dinner is just extravagant.

of course in malaysia, we have this 'open house' concept where those who celebrate xmas (or any other celebrations) will have their houses open to anyone to visit. & i mean anyone(except criminals with evil intents). we'll serve them drinks (non-alcoholic) & food & enjoy their company. this 'open house' tradition is common not only among christians, but also muslims & hindus & buddhists.

gridlock, i don't know about israel but malaysia's very safe despite the warnings from the US govt which i think is too biased & paranoid. still, u cannot be too cautious as your govt has created a lot of enemies for u so just be careful when u go abroad, ok? have a nice holiday, dude. this goes to everyone.

Our's is purely a family thing. We all go to one of Mum's sister's places (or her's), open presents at 10:00am, eat good food, drink too much champaign, socialise... It's a good day. These occasions are important for us as our family is spread fairly thinly.

for me it's staying with the inlaws, drinking too much, eating too much (usually a turkey, but I'm trying to change that), eating some more, drinking some more, opening some presents and go to bed VERY late

yes he is 11 and I can't wait to see hime. One of the gifts I got him is a BB gun with a scope, we come from a long line of hunters and fisherman.

If I had the money and time off from work I would be on my way right now. And I am sure no matter what you cooked it would be a great meal.
