I didn't get any good loot from the imps, besides gold charms I didn't use (YMMV). I think the only equipment I upgraded in the wastelands was my sword (found the Sword of Gods) and leggings (bought a set from Kroxy). If you are in the mood for a killing spree, go ahead; if you get bored, start skipping them.

Btw, what is this about upgrading the dragon armor?
You mean, when you get it from patrick, and go to Grischa along with the dragonheart gem? Or...
