I just can't keep the correct building sequences in my head and when I've found/selected the correct building at last and want to look for a nice cosy place = yellow alarm comes. Ok, I kill, but then I lost track of either the building I wanted to create, or the place I wanted to set it up <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> - or I forgot where the upgrading building was <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

But that's just the fun of it! You have to wait until you have a good moment's peace until you place a building and work on your settlement. It doesn't have to be stressy, you just have to pick the right moment <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ah, well, my deathblow spell (Todesschlag) makes 125 dam., already, that's good.

Hm... my lvl 15 avatar does 125 damage with a single blow when she's berserked <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'm playing the game a 2nd time now as a warrior with sword/light armour lvl 4, healing spell lvl 1 and Dark Magic (curse lvl 2). I'm lvl 11 now, activated the race monuments from the start and have turned into a "tower-loving strategist", cleared Shiel (the Dryad map?). Ah, covering the map with countless towers is not exactly pro-environmental <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> but keeps my warriors alive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> - still hating the yellow alarm, cramps my architectural "design" (here a tower, there a tower).

Actually, towers aren't *that* good. Their rate of fire is slow, and they are virtually defenceless against attackers that get close. Positioning an actual army is much more effective. A combination of both is best of course, since towers don't count against your troop limit <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Oh... not if you have as much as I have <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> - I place my ava a distance in front of the towers to attack/lure(Windfell was nice for that, where the strong orc attacks attacks came. First maps with the iron soldiers). As enemies could come from the Spiderman side and the one west of it => towers all along the 2 paths and my ava. Then I built up windarchers slowly and let them defend the Lenia and main orc attack side, left the spiderman side solely up to my towers - no enemy came through.

I conquered the 2 next monuments without any loss (4 healers, 21 upgraded windarchers + my ava). Further no losses until I got the stone/iron place for the human monument - all plastered with towers. After getting the Aria pool, the first Iron Soldiers came. I killed them without loss, too. I let my ava demolish the fire towers alone, just aided by 2 clerics/healers from a distance to heal her, built towers again with 2 troops of elven workers - my main army was far behind me.

It was quite humourous for me to see my ava kneedeep in dead orcs. I did have losses when I stormed the main Orc settlement, where Brannigan was, because my army counted 50 then and I couldn't prevent the paladins from running into all directions. Gathered my rest army and then let my ava kill the last iron soldiers alone to reach the portal.

Let's see how my slow tower approach+ranged warriors works in the other maps. I know it was very helpful in the Rift area - but solving maps like this takes hours and only works if I have plenty ressources.
Kiya <toweraddict>

Then I killed the spider man after telling him to let his spiders attack - they tried to come back and aid him, but had to walk past the long track of towers => all were dead, only one reached my army, heavily wounded and was no problem.

Yes i became SF as a x-mas gift. And as i read about drummers i must smile about that. I never heard about orc drummers before DD. So Marian must have his "divine" fingers in that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

No, actually not. I didn't make the orcs. I didn't even design them. But i know that a few guys in the graphics team over there played <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> at that time. So it's most likely coincidence. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

*hypersarcasm*
WOAH! So many games Marian worked in!

Yes, i know, I'm brilliant. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

He's TRULLY a great man: I mean working in so many projects at the same time...

Was about time somebody found that out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
Actually we finished the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> graphics in early Summer 2002, the Rest of the year i was working for Virgin Lands on Spellforce units until January 2003 my work on <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> started.

Hell! I just realised that he helped J.R.R. Tokien to write LOTR! Maybe Marian is some kind of Divinity? (hence the name of the first game)...

No, no. If I would have co-written LOTR I could live from the LOTR Sales and merchanize and wouldn't have to make computergames. Besides I'm not THAT old. And a <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> usually also rarely creates computergames. Well, afaik of course... But you have a good point. Since LOTR is kinda brilliant and -as we found out earlier- me too, there is a clear link. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Yeah that first map with the Blade Soldiers was a bitch. My War of Attrition-tactic worked pretty well though. I did use a lot of towers, but my Windarchers did most of the shootin'. At that time, my avatar was not yet strong enough to tackle those blade soldiers alone, so I sent in my entire 80-man army, plus the Human titan. The battle didn't last long. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Never used the Human Titan until yet - it's a griffon, right? No, I couldn't stand the thought of it being killed. There are a few griffons I have to kill, but I feel really bad doing this (too strong attachment to these beautiful creatures).

I just used the Elven one, just for the looks of it, but when I had nearly cleared the map.

Stormrider, where are you now in the game? I'm on the way to see my first dwarves - Sheesh, can't keep the name of these maps in mind. They have German names in the game, but when I save, the names are English <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

The Orc Titan looks nice, it's a large lizard made out of lava (?).
Kiya

PS: As I've got the Elven rune to build up woods again, I'm thinking of revisiting done maps and creating forests again <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> - ok, I'm silly... but they look terrible without trees <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

Yeah the Human Titan is a Griffon Rider. But let me tell you, it takes a *long* time getting killed! And if you should lose it, you can always tell yourself that the *rider* got killed and not the Griffon <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

The Elven Titan, now him I don't mind dying. Stupid walking tree.

The first map where you meet the Dwarves are the Southern Windwalls I think. Currently I have just entered the city of Whisper. Man, those Lea's Avengers are badasses! They got my ridiculously powerful avatar before I could even get near them!

Yeah I like those foresters too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I wish I could stick with Humans and Elves. I hate Dwarves. Stupid big-nosed smelly beardhuggers. And I like Orcs and Trolls even less. Well, let's hope the Dark Elves are cool...

Actually, though I've never played it, I believe Warhammer featured Orc Drummers too. In fact, the premise of musicians in a battle is almost as old as battle itself <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

You know one other thing that bugs me about SF? It's the fact that Quest Items and Valuable Items are in the same Inventory compartment. You never know what you can sell and what you have to keep. Sure, some items are sell-proof, but some aren't, and if you sell them, you have to buy them back :s

I used about 8 ice towers. After 6 the first Avenger came and died. I built 2 more, the next 2 came and then the last. My avas were safely behind the line, used ranged weapons/spells. AFAIK, they're lvl 18, hm? Yes, Whisper is hard... Which lvl are you for them?

Remember the mosaic quest? I built about 20 ice towers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> around that place, activated the mosaic - crept up to the place where the enemies spawned and built towers again <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

Oh, the Dwarven axe throwers helped me against "Lost all Hope" => Amra's grave. And without Orc Totems and Troll stone throwers/towers, I wouldn't have cleared the Rift. And, errhm, I like the Elven Titan, it's an Ent!

If I play it for the 3rd time, I think my ava will have the name "TowerLady"... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

I agree <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> - after clearing a map I spend a lot of time rearranging everything: one page swords, 1 page helmets etc. As for gems: I always keep one in store and don't sell it. About quest items: Yes, they should have made all sellproof, so even those gems that are necessary would be safe. In some cases I lurked the Spellforce Forum first before selling.

Stormrider, do you remember the ill hermit quest? I'm sure, he didn't attack me in my first game, in my 2nd one he did <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" /> - wish, I knew what I have done wrong. I fear I busted a subquest, I should have got from him.
Kiya

Oh, yes, if I take care of the people I get on that map, they remain and can be used for further probs, didn't know that I could re-use them. And it is really easier playing a fighter, I can kill enemies at a far lower lvl and don't die all the time.

quite strange! my bro hit about the same problem (not sure of the error code though) when he played bloodrayne last nite. i run directx9b as well.

direct3d is a directx-related problem. either the game or the directx has problem running with the other. can spellforce run on opengl? if it can, then try it out.

Carrie, be sure to download the latest drivers for your graphics card. Yes, it's a boring line, but sometimes reinstalling newer drivers helps.

Updated video drivers would be my guess too. Does your card support 3D? Or it could be that your card is older and does not support the dx9? And do your other games still play okay? That might be a hint as to wether the dx9 is supported or not...I am just guessing, so don't freak out okay? There are no problems, only solutions!

there's another game called knightshift or once upon a knight which i think may be similar to spellforce. a mix of rpg & rts.

sadly the demo which is about 200++MB large is too much for my poor 56k modem. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

@janggut,

As an RPG, I still rank KnightShift #1 for avatar control and identification.
SpellForce is a fabulous and superb step towards the futuristic “Perfection” of RPG in concept.
My only takes against SpellForce is the user interface in general, including the border scroll jerky performance and the cumbersomeness of handling multitudes of items in real time without a pause-game concurrency.
The user interface “design” is graphically acceptable or fair and not bad at all with organising things but the pause game function is unforgivable when paired with the complexity of this game.

I still think that the RPG market has a lot to learn about story writing.
Knight shift has a story wrapped on missions of finding people and items not a story to be told as an interesting tale.
Spell Force has a story that is even worse than KS as the quests are “orders” that do not make any strategic sense.

I think that the “bad” story of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> is rather “better” than both of KS and SF. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Something is missing in all of those stories, it is called the *Soul* of the writer.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
