Like having one hidden in the mushrooms taking you to a miniture Alice in Wonderland world.

Or *Lost in the Rifts portal* with a very clear warning that you must enter a name for saving the game before you enter.
Once you are in, you cannot go back but this type of battlefield has a different exit door to another battlefield that has two one-way portals as well. This means that you keep on going from battlefield to battlefield without ever coming back until you exit the game and load it where you left off before entering the infinite loop-mode.
All those battlefields do not get saved to disk but there should be an option to save your character’s stats such that you get the level-up bonus of the battlefield points you gained.

Just an idea of a combination of skirmish and RPG, or perhaps I had been playing Knight-Shift too much.

To tell you the truth I really hate it when I clean up an area and have to go back to do the same job all over again. On the other hand, those areas are usefull for levl. up. I mean I use them a lot to practice and gain some xp over and over again in order to play the rest of the game with some desent stats. I suppose that in I could use battle fields for that job and it seems to me pretty nice. Now that you have mentioned though, the idea of the open battle fields after the games´end is very interesting. I would like to keep my char alive and whenever I feel like go for some hunting, search for unique items that I could gain from killings in those areas and generally have some fun without having to complete any quest or follow a plot.

Same here. One of the most annoying points when I play D2.

When you find a big kettle of crazy, it's best not to stir it.
