Is stealing from non-playable characters (NPCs) considered cheating in Divine Divinity? I took everything from everyone in Aleroth...

Nope, it's a skill you can choose in the skill book, right? Totally legal IMO

Beware stealing is not approved by the authorities in the various cities, not to mention this Paladin in particular [Linked Image]

Kiya <twisted Div mind>

It's just "buying" without all that administrative "red dip"? Tape... something? A slang word for too much paperwork

I believe "commandeering" or "requisitioning" would be appropriate terms.

Others would name it "freeing" or "releasing" or "liberating".

Milady gave into the thieves exhortations to steal and robbed even her dear friends. Alas only after maturing into the Divine One and possessing almost 1,000,000 in gold without any need for it did she realize that selling her soul for money was not only sneaky and hypocritical, but also totally unnecessary. Her good friend the Orc of the Wastelands will trade her anything she wants and the warrioress always has money left over.

Edit: Well, it did help in the beginning. And she once bought a bow in the Dark Forest that costed her over 70,000 gold; it was nice to be able to buy it without blinking. A wonderful bow btw. But was it worth compromising her core values?

Don't listen to them Luke. Stay away from the Dark side.

Use the force. Resist temptation.
Mardaneus trusts and admires you and yet you would steal from him!
You will become The Divine One--a common thief who makes poison from rotting garbage and stabs people in the back. You will have to repent. And trust me you really won't need the gold; you'll have plenty. Sell your swords not your soul.

LordMalis has a terrible disease called cleptomania. It is an atrocious affliction and you shouldn't rub his nose in it. He can't help it. He sees a lock and is overcome with curiousity!

But as the book says: "The Divine One will come. Will he be good or evil? Or will such concepts not matter to them."

Not a direct quote, but it's something along those lines.

Mini spoiler follows.

There is 1 way to reedeem your soul from the dark blemish of theft which stains you; this is what my character did at any rate. After joining the thieves guild, kill all of the thieves in their lair. The proof of the redemption of your soul will be the experience you gain. Ironically however your reputation will drop, and the townspeople will revile you though they will be afraid to attack. The guards will leave you alone. After you leave Stormfist Castle although your reputation again drops, the townspeople will cease their hostility. Now do you want to do that to pay for your life of sin and degradation or do you want to stay clean from the start?

Kiya, you are saying that the ends justify the means?
