If Larian Studios did D3 what would it look like?

Well for one thing it would probably actually get done. But what would it look like? How would it be different or the same as D2?

I think there would be alot more eye candy. There would be a whole lot more exploration. The game would not be so lineir and predictable. Not so much of a confused clickfest. (although in Leonas dungeon sometimes there were so many baddies my character could not be seen) Perhaps there would be a good reason why all those monsters are there. Is Hell really that full? MMM??
BTW the last time my brain was eaten, I was told it tasted like chicken. Ew!

I think it would fail.

Diablo is purely combat and multiplayer driven. That's what the crowd out there will be expecting. Larian are far more interested in creating a deep RPG than a strategic combat game. As soon as the reviewers see it – and it will be reviewers who loved Diablo 1 and 2 – they will be very disappointed to see their action interrupted by stories and talking and NPC interaction (other than selling loot). I say let Larian do Divinity and leave Blizard North with Diablo.

1. I don't mean to suggest that Larian should or would ever do Diablo; I rather doubt it in fact. I simply thought it would be interesting to speculate and conjure up creative imagination.

2. There is an active SP community at diabloii.net. I played D2 for 2 years single player only--I used to have a slow dial up and a slow computer which made MP unenjoyable. Nonetheless Larian should be quite capable of doing a multiplayer game, and in fact will be as I understand it.

3. Most definitely D2 is a combat game. NWN had too much dialogue for me, and I didn't care for Verdistis at 1st. It does have RPG elements. Blending them appears to be a strength of Larian.

4. One strength of D2 imo lies in its character and skill system--there are still builds in D2 I haven't made yet that I may yet return and tinker with. A merging of Divinity with a D2 skill type of system would be awesome.

5. Another strength of D2 is the way that even after beating the game with a character you can go back and keep playing him in a quest to get your guy to lvl 99, or get all the hot elite items, or complete certain or all sets. These features could be implemented in a Divinity type of D3. If Divinity had for instance another map, accesible after beating the game, with random placement of items and perhaps random monsters or even random subquests which could be infinitely replayed that would be cool.

It would have a story line
aside from that I totally agree with the above posters, have you actually tried playing D2 in multiplayer .... I mean I ran into a guy once who had minus 12000 hitpoints, that sort of thing really turns me off

I know. That's just my speculation.

I prefer single player too. I'll be interested to see the Larian multiplayer...

Agreed on all of that. What I fear is that I've read what all the Diablo fans have written about Divine Divinity. They don't like it because it's different to Diablo. It would happen again. I'm not saying it will be a bad game, but it will fail because RPG fans who hate Diablo won't buy it on principal, and those who do like Diablo will rubish it and not buy it either.

Diablo II definately has a supurb skill system. As far as I've seen, I think it's unbeaten.

Like my idea of having a re-randomisable battlefield at the end of Beyond Divinity. Quoting my cousin who finished Dungeon Seige recently: "So I've built up this team that can defeat dragons... and that's it. There's nothing else." We've just spent 60 hours creating this personalised hero. Let us play with it some more!

I think what's needed is for both Divinity and Diablo to take a little bit of advice from each other. Improve Divinity's combat and character development, and improve Diablo's story and variety.

Larian is to Diablo 3 as Rocket Scientist is to janitorial duties. Not that I don't like diablo, I do, it just doesn't have any where near the depth of

I can't believe it : In the older days it was normal that a game stopped at some point and now the people complain about this ?

I think, the people are just complaining about that, because Blizzard invented that sort / way of "replay value" in RPG games. I mean, a few years ago, a game would stop, you have fulfilled your tast (usually saving the world and that was it.

I see what you mean. It's always disappointed me as well, only in RPGs though. In a platformer or an action game, they give you things to make you stronger at specific moments. In an RPG, you have put so much personal effort into the character and some of the powers were only received in the last few areas of the game. You've just received these new toys and you don't get a chance to play with them! It's a great thing to work towards, but why if you can't use them?

Yes, I understand.

I'm not sure whether I should call it

A "We've done it always without, so why complain ?"

or

B "why hadn't have somebody this idea *way* earlier ?"

Alrik.

if larians develop D3, u'll be surprised that the 3rd act boss is the hardest & the game end boss is the easiest.

& u may have to save a milk maid from a demonic cow by sacrificing a character level & spared with only 1 hitpoint.

u may have to save kain from insanity by going underground (where else can dungeons be anyway?) & fight many undead creatures till u find a super-cool easter egg NPC named ash who rescues u from certain death by using his chainsaw arm & a boom boom stick.

not to forget, u have to recite & remember alrik's poem to solve a puzzle which will lead u to a secret area where u can interact with larian NPCs & get a super larian [insert fav armour].

another quest will have u pit your wits against a drow who's an archive keeper of the game. u should know her name or be struck dead before the first question is asked.

battle of the mind continues with a rune maker who looks like a tasmanian devil. hey, he's a unique boss, ok? the name starts with hand & ends with foot (that one ends with a 'd').

MORE undead!! this time with a mummy & 2 of his undead cohorts that look like anubis & (insert another egyptian diety's name). he goes by the name of THE unDAD!

to aid u in your quest against evil, one bug-squashing hero that shines like an angel that RAZES enemies in the wake of his cape. guess his name.

a greek heroine will be your love interest though she's not interested in u. her name is .....tia . a jealous suitor will try to destroy u. his name? b....ard. these character wil be reversed in role if u play the opposite gender. oh yes, u will have to find a necklace for your love interest. what?! no, this is original idea!

there is this orc that u can never kill as he's too friendly. he is the only orc in the game & he weilds the deadliest weapon: les-paul semi-acoustic guitar. he's canadian too!

Instead of Diablo 3 the name would be Diabolic Diablo. The expansion pack would be named Waypointwayfarer, but 2 months prior to release would be renamed Way Past Diablo.

The music would be excellent.

There would be cut scenes.

Larian would wisely leave Diablo's skill system basically intact, but in an effort to improve various inequities they would make the following changes to the Zon.
1. To fix Guided Arrow Larian would do what they have done to True Shot--break it.
2. The Valk would have dialogue which reflects her bravery, divinity, and stupidity.
3. The only good crossbows--Buriza and Demon machine would be taken out of the game. In fact all but 1 unique bow would be taken out of the game.

No minions would ever get exp points for you.

In order to complete certain vital quests you would have to discover/stumble over a cleverly concealed underground entrance. In accordance with the Diablo tradition the maps would however be randomized every time you restart the game forcing you to painstakingly trek over every little piece of ground all over again.
