For me a writer is good enough when he/she manages to "travell me" and you did. Also for me a writer is good when he writes based on his OWN ideas and not to an idea that someone else invented. Mr Tolkien would start jump up and down in his grave if he could see what is happening with fanfic based on HIS idea. (I wonder to whom I am refering to? )

Oh, Lucretia, my dear -- I think I'm in love! Let's see how many people you've just insulted:

Alrik (for writing Star Wars fanfiction; Shaak Ti and the Jedi are hardly his own ideas)
Elliot_Kane (for writing fanfiction, period)
JRR Tolkien (for pulling ideas from Norse and British mythos)
Leather_Raven (and in one single post! Rivellon is hardly her invention, now, is it?)
The whole Larian Studio (Marian admitted, after all, that the fantasy cliches were deliberate; hence, they were basing things on other people's ideas)

I'd make a scathing, snarky remark, but... I think you're doing a brilliant job of mocking yourself here.

Winterfox you are such a mean person that you put words in my mouth that I did not say. Really people like you make me wonder where the world is heading.
None of the above persons felt insulted by my post. And you know why? Because they know my intentions. And I think that you should not speak when you are not aware of certain facts.

Al KNOWS my opinion about Star Wars story he wrote in comparison with Adorant. I have send it to him via pm when he asked my opinion and that is something that it is between me and him. But he knows how I see it.

As for Leather_Raven now. The Novella if I am not mistaken is her fisrt published work. And as I said to her I liked it. But in my previous post from which you quoted only what you wanted like a buthcer (as always) I have wrote to her that I can not wait to see her new work and meet the heroes SHE will invent. The novella was just a taste of what she can do in writing. Now if Ms Prattchett felt insulted she wouldn´t thank me for my words would she? That is because she understood my good intentions. But I suppose good intentions are unknown to you. And if she did felt insulted then I apologize to her with all my heart. Because I unlike you I know how to say "I am sorry".

Elliot knows my opinion about his work via pm. Period.

Mr Tolkien created a WHOLE new world BY HIMSELF. 1200 pages. And yes perhaps he was based in those mythos you refered but his heroes were his own. Not borrowed. You are so funny.

Larian Studios are not writers. Yes they write some things for the games but they are DEVELOPERS. They create games, not literature! Now if Marian or someone else was insulted by my post let them speak for themselves. You are still funny.

And please from now on do me a favour and not speak to me. I don´t like to speak with mean and ugly persons. I am not fond of sharks. Say what you want, spit poison, I do not care. Just stay away from me.

No, no, you said it all by yourself. Here's a word of advice: never, ever, make blanket generalizations that you aren't prepared to back up. They'll come back and bite you in the behind. 'S rule of the thumb.

Oh, I'm aware of your intention all right. Just giving you perspective on how your words can be interpreted, m'dear.

*giggles* Come now, you've been making jabs at me in various posts, in multiple threads. Now I reply and you cry "mean!"?

I love you, too. You are priceless; irony and hypocrisy make the world go 'round.

If you think that I am an hypocrite let me inform you that I do not care about your opinion. The opinion of people who I like is that what it counts for me. But we will never know if I am will we? Because this is not RL. I dont "cry mean" I say it. And on the other threads that you mentioned. I say it just in front of your face. That is my opinion. You are mean not only in this forum but in other forums too. You seem to have a great pleasure to torture people with your poison. Because this is what makes you feel superior. I am so sorry. You must have had a terrible childhood... I feel pitty about you.

Right. I probably shouldn't say anything, but... For someone who is claiming the moral high ground, you seem to be awfully prone to make personal attacks. And I happen to think the point is valid.

Not only is the last remark in brackets a cheap shot, totally destroying the credibility of supposed moral superiority, but the whole comment is insulting. I realize it's only your opinion, but it's a broadly shared, misguided opinion. What is your definition of orginal ideas? Every single epic story out there borrows style and character traits from earlier works. (For reference about LotR, see http://www.jitterbug.com/origins/lotr.html)

You may think it is easy to work with a borrowed setting, but in fact, if you want to execute it well, it can actually be harder. Writing in a setting of your own device would give the author a lot more freedom, a lot more leeway to introduce plot devices, etcetera.

Writing with a borrowed setting and characters, you have to stick with the established events, and breathe life into characters that haven't sprung from your own imagination. And this, is hard. Which you can see from a lot of these products, which I will gladly admit, are just awful and not worth reading.

Now, a good author will succeed in breathing life into these characters, with dimension that are as believable as the original source, or in some cases, even more so. Once an author has done this, I see no difference between this or starting from scratch, as it requires as much effort in both cases.

Now, if you had said you didn't enjoy reading works which use an esablished setting, ala. That's your opinion. But you speak in terms of 'good' authorship, and since the opposite of good is obviously 'bad', you are saying authors who use an established setting are 'bad'.

As for intention, it is obvious what your intention was with the remark "I wonder to whom I am refering to?". You wanted to deliver a thinly veiled personal attack. The fact that to do so, you had to insult an entire catogory of writing didn't deter you. Well, in that case, don't be too surprised when you don't get a positive response.

----------------------------------------------
I never claimed that high ground moral. Not to you nor to anybody else. On the contrary.

As for the rest, read the whole thread and then you will realize that my reaction is because I am fed up with the lady. That is my perogative. And as far as good or bad writing, I am not a writer. I am a reader. I say my opinion. That is my right. Sometimes it is not well writen. But when I am insulting to people, I apologize. At least I have that desency. Go on, read the whole thread and then some other forums. Maybe you will change your mind. Maybe you don´t. Your choice. My choice too.

*sigh* And I wanten NOT to write here anymore ...

Winterfox, what you've listed is Star Wars fan fiction, but I guess you can figure out why I tried to build up my own fantasy universe ?

It's SO easy nowadays to accuse someone of "being not original" that it's a pain sometimes.

Sometimes I feel lost : Everything "ori´ginal" and creative seems tzo have been already invented; o I've never any chance to be "original".

It's so easy for critics nowadays to claim someone is "not original" and then sit back and smile or even giggle, being proud about another great hit into the face of the writer, that I don't know what to do.

I try to be original in my own fantasy universe as far as I can; as a result, my Goddess seems to be "childish" and the characters not easy to see, just because they don't feed clichés. I didn't want a Goddess that is like you think a Goddess should be, because I wanted and tried to be "original".

EDIT : Viper : You are right. This is getting out of hand now.

2nd EDIT : Luc, it's "vault", not "fault".

Hmmm, Alrik, I know it sounds crazy, but the statements you quoted from WinterFox actually defend your work, as WF was countering Luc's statement about "original works" Of course her whole counter-statement was a little unnecessary and sharp, but not unexpected since it's obvious this thread has turned into a personal "war" and they're shooting on sight now

I agree we've seen enough of it now. Either Luc and WinterFox should realise and accept by now that they'll never agree to disagree on this one and let the thread get back on topic, or it should simply be closed (which would be a pity imo, this is not what Alrik posted it for).

Ladies & Gentlemen...

Just for the record, I am not at all insulted by Lucretia's post. Most of what I write at the moment does indeed use other people's characters and creations, but I am well aware the barb was not aimed in my direction, so I just ignored it.

It can in fact be very hard to take someone else's characters, keep them in character, and write new and original stories about them.

What I do find rather sad is that a simple exchange of opinions - not facts, mind, but opinions! - has gotten as far out of hand as it has here.

Before now, I have had readers tell me they utterly loathed something I wrote - hated character, plot, etc with a passion - and I have thanked them for their opinion. Other readers have loved the same story, and I have thanked them too. All opinions are valuable to a writer, whether good or bad, because they all teach us something.

What is more, all opinions are based purely on the taste of the reader, and thus are of equal value. No writer, regardless of talent, will please everyone. It just isn't possible.

With that in mind, how about calling a truce, eh? Is there really any purpose to be served by everyone insulting each other? At the end of the day - will anyone benefit from it? Or will we all in fact be the poorer...

Just my opinion

Yes. Thank you; some people will never quite get it. Buh. What does Alrik think? I have a whole profile full of fanfictions, for the Muses' sake.

Well, it's actually the second time muisunderstood Winterfox. The first time was with her KOTOR fan fiction story , where I thought she wrote about a Jedi Academy , but it was a Sith Academy instead ...

I read half this page.

Ouch, Luc, WF, stop yelling at each other! Your both fine members of the forum with no need to verbally attack each other!

The novella was great, BTW!

I hope you all will stop bickering, and be friends again. Oh, and for the heck of it.

Jurak, your locaction is SO un-original

@all Silly, ain't it? thats how I felt reading your posts. they make no sense. If you all stop yelling at each other for what the other person said, you wont have a reasont o argue!

SOME ego's? I love ego's! Good food, but like plastic.
