The first game probably wouldn't work, but Beyond Divinity could have benefited from a two-player co-operative mode. I'm not a fan of multiplayer myself, but I can see the interest in it.
If anything, this would be a major patch. Getting network gaming to work can be a real hassle. Larian have obviously put this idea on the back burner until the more pressing problems are sorted out.
Multiplayer is coming in Divine Divinity 2, so your wish is coming...

I cannot even start to immagine how multiplayer could work in BD. no Coop in anycase, capture the flag maybe... let 2 sets of char loose (main + DK) and give it a "capture the flag option", they can either choose to fight each other, or to just avoid each other and try and solve the quest before the other does... having the control over the main and the DK split between 2 computers / players will just create havoc... since when one dies, the other does too, they will have to stick together, and i can just hear the unearthly language between 2 people if one wants to go downstairs and the other is aiming up.
Unfortunately the only games that REALLY go well in multiplayer is strategy.. build your base, and go kill or get killed.
so make that nine .... they might bring out a multiplayer - catch the flag expansion to the game later on, i am not against that, let 2 people battle it out at home, but not coop... i would kill the person on the other computer before i got the the 3rd skeleton.
Your existence alone, is excuse enough for the creation of the entire universe… Il you my darling Jeanne-Dré

Make that 10...
There was an RPG a few years back that had TCP/IP support and a dueling arena build into the game, and it totally blew chunks. It was such a memorable game that I can't even remember the name now. I think it is in a drawer for games that I will never play again.

Neverwinter Nights works alright in co-operative mode. It's what the game is about! Beyond Divinity could do the same. Of course you have to play with someone you trust and can rely on.
RPG competative games don't work because not all characters are designed for combat. A lone Rouge or Cleric is easy pickings versus a Barbarian or Wizard. One multiplayer "RPG" that was alright was Necromania. I don't know if it was ever released, but I played the demo. The game was essentially Spy vs Spy (if you remember that one!) with six unique players. You had to find the keys to get to the exit. The keys are hidden about the map in logs, chests, behind other locked doors, etc. There's only one of each key, so you need to kill who ever has it to get it! You can booby trap hiding places and anywhere on the ground. Each round earns you experience which you can spend on Combat, Armour, Mana and Speed. I can't remember if you could buy skills too. And just for the hell of it, the game was M rated with things like the skeleton cackling "DIE, MOTHER ******!" There's about 16 demonic characters to choose from, each with their own special abilities. I wouldn't mind getting it if I ever saw it, even if I don't play multiplayer.

I played Diablo 1 multiplayer all those many many many moons ago, it was mainly hack and slash with no quests like in the one player mode but it sure was a lot of fun. I own all three Neverwinters nights games and play on line sometimes, the good thing is its free unlike Everquest and others. I do think it would be great to be able to play Beyond Divinity on line, although I do prefer the single player mode, playing with others on line is fun in a completely different way. The biggest problem that I see is finding compatible players. If Larian brought out a multiplayer version I'm all for it.
