Maybe the daggers were there to keep people from looking closely for other wounds, and the blood to cover up the fact that there was none left in the body. Then again, maybe he just stumbled out of the bar drunk one night, and someone decided to relieve him of his purse and got more of a struggle than anticipated.

After recruiting both the elven and dwarven council members, talk to your elven love by the well in the elven village. She/he (depending on your character's gender) will give you a picture.
