I ran away at first, to try to get help. There is a notice put on the bulletin board by the castle if you kill everyone (not sure about avoiding them).

Yes but still, there should be more of an effect on your rep and folks' attitude towards you. Especiallly when you consider how npcs react to other relatively trivial things you do. I mean come on--- kill 10 thieves--thieves! and everyone hates you. Kill dozens of soldiers and people hardly notice.
