Hello,

Each time I try to go on the chat forums I get the following error.

"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 44 bytes) in /.../ubbthreads/postlist.php on line 88"

Hm, difficult to say. I remember others having problems, too, but I don't remember how it was solved.

Perhaps ypou might try to delete the cookies for this Forum here, but be careful not to delete other cookies you want to keep as well.

Can you give more information about the problem? For instance, was OS were you using (e.g., Windows ME, Redhat Linux, etc.). What browser were you using (e.g., Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla) and what is the version of your browser? What time of day, and date did the problem occur (this might help Larian correlate your problem with their maintenance schedules, for instance)?

It is not clear from your initial complaint whether the problem is on your computer or on the Larian server. More information might help them discover the problem.

Maybe one of the 2500 results on Google for that error message might be a help to someone? Just an idea (if anyone feels like it)

Very helpful, Kej!

From the google descriptions, it appears that (at the time Gurthamoth tried to use the Chat Forums) someone had placed a very, very large image in one of the threads. The forum software tried to send the image as part of the thread display, but choked on the size of the file before it completed its own (server-side) processing.

I guess someone removed the offendingly large file, because the problem apparently resolved itself. Alternatively, the Larian folks might have increased the image-size tolerance of the forums, but I doubt it since we haven't seen any announcements.

Common sense guidelines for folks who want to share images in forums and other web pages:

- If the image is smaller than 25Kbytes, the server can handle it and most users' browsers won't suffer too much lag (delay). [Linked Image] <= for example, this is 11Kb

- If the image is larger than 25 Kb, try shrinking it to less than 25Kb by
-- changing the image format (e.g., from .bmp to .gif), or
-- making a thumbnail image and using it as a link to your own web site.

- If you can't shrink the image without making it too obscure or unintelligible, post the image on your own site and post a text link (e.g., "click here to view image") to it on the forum thread.
