Nice to see you back, Egin. What is particular to aikido (I mean, beside tae kwon do, karate, etc.)? It is great that you do some of the training outside; nice place under that gorgeous tree. Must hurt if you fall on a root, though.

On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

Ok, it may be a bit long, but I just can't find a way to make it shorter. Morihei Ueshiba wrote: "The secret of Aikido, is to harmonize with the movement of the universe and bring ourselves into accord with the universe itself." O-Sensei maintained that Budo is a work of love, a path to overcome discord in ourselves and bring peace to the world, "To make the heart of the universe one's own heart." O-Sensei taught that true awareness is not grasped by intellect alone. "This is not mere theory," he said. "You must practice it." The essence of all Aikido technique is the use of total body movements to create spherical motion around a stable, energized center. Even when a technique appears to be using only one part of the body, close observation reveals the Aikidoist's movements are, in fact, total body movements. Properly executed, some techniques are spectacular; sending an opponent flying thorough the air. Others are small, deft movements that immobilize the aggressor. Both results are achieved through precise use of leverage, inertia, gravity, and the action of centrifugal and centripetal forces. Ultimately, it is the energy of the attack itself which brings down the attacker. The final aim of Budo is personal transformation. Its goal is the creation of integrated human beings who are able to bring the totality of their wisdom and capabilities in order to resolve a problem. Students train themselves to capture the opponent's action and redirect it with techniques of martial efficiency and power. At the same time, they become aware of the tendency to overreact to opposition, and learn to remain centered under all conditions. The Aikidoist develops a relaxed posture in which the weight of the body is directed towards its physiologic center in the lower abdomen. Gravity is no longer a force to be overcome. Rather it serves to support and stabilize posture. As a result, ordinary movement assumes an appearance of grace and economy. The effects of centering are mental as well as physical. In addition vitality increases, the senses are sharpened, and one is less affected by the irritations and annoyances of daily living. This state is referred to in Japan as having hara, or strong ki. It is a manifestation of the inner quality which aids the student of Aikido to develop to his or her fullest potential in every area of life.

I know hapkido, basicly its just how to stop an attack. Like hit the armpit of anyone grabbing things above your shoulders, how to get out of a headlock etc... had few lessons a big while back. One old expression Though there are many paths At the foot of the mountain All those who reach the top See the same moon. --------------------- As for hapkido, both founders of hapkido - Grandmoster Choi Yong Sul (born in Korea, but moved into Japan when he was a kid.) and founder of aikido - Morihei Ueshiba learned from one master Sokaku Takeda. They learned - Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu (Dai = big, to = sword, Ryu = school, Aiki = combined senses, Jujutsu = soft material art) is one style of the old Japanese Ju-jutsu, which first of all uses hand, elbow and shoulder joint locks to defend against various armed and unarmed attacks. After spending 30! years at Sokaku Takeda household GM Choi returned to Korea and started to train and teach. The fact, that GM Choi’s first student held the first Dan in judo had an effect on the development of Hapkido. All Defense techniques against holds at the wrist, sleeve, collar and against judo throws go back to these roots.

First of all I am happy to see you Janggut, my dearest friend. sounds a lot like Tai Chi Kwan, Egin. using the force of your opponent against them, i mean. Yes mate, more or less. Unfortunately I really don't know much about Tai Chi Kwan, and all I've seen so far is some sort of gymnastics with slow, dance-like moves. But I may be mistaken. I will definitely try so search more info on tai chi. Btw, I am hopefully meeting with tai chi master this week, so I will be able to ask questions
